"Rock'n Beach Cities - Phil Connelly"

Former El Segundo musician Phil Connelly returns to the South Bay Friday, Feb. 5, opening for 100 Monkeys at Saint Rocke. Connelly will be performing tracks from his forthcoming album, due out this spring.

Born in Massachusetts, Connelly spent his formative years in Pennsylvania. His parents were lovers of music and Connelly soaked up the sounds of the records his folks played around the house.

“Neither of my parents were musicians, but they loved good music,” Connelly recalled. “My mom was into Sting and Led Zeppelin. My dad liked the Grateful Dead and Pink Floyd.”

Eventually, Connelly found his way to the guitar by way of the Dave Matthews Band.
Musician Phil Connelly will be performing at Saint Rocke in Hermosa Beach Friday, Feb. 5

“I wish my parents had stuck a guitar in my hands when I was 3 or 4 years old … I would be so much better today,” Connelly said. “I first heard Dave Matthews when I was really into rap groups like Bone, Thugs n’ Harmony. After hearing Dave’s music, I knew that’s what I wanted to do. I figured out quickly that girls liked it when guys played Dave Matthews.”

For a brief period, Connelly attended college, studying marketing. While working in a restaurant in Pennsylvania, Connelly stumbled into a job offer that brought him out to California.

“I moved out here to work for an online company that was based in Westlake Village. Their headquarters was right across the street from Guitar Center headquarters … I used to look out my window everyday at Guitar Center, knowing that’s where I wanted to be,” said Connelly.

He then took another job in the South Bay and began to play solo acoustic gigs at local venues like the Purple Orchid.

“I just walked up to the bartender at the Orchid and asked if I could play,” he said. “She said she couldn’t pay me, but I just started playing anyway. The owner began to take notice and eventually started paying me to play there regularly. I loved living in El Segundo. Everyone there was so laid-back and I got to live really close to the beach.”

Currently, Connelly is working on his latest, yet-to-be-titled disc. “Things are so close to being done with the record,” said Connelly. “There is just a lot of mixing left to do and I hope to have it out this spring.”

Connelly said he had two venue goals for 2010 and has already accomplished them both. “I really wanted to play Saint Rocke and House of Blues this year. I’ll be at Saint Rocke Feb. 5 and at House of Blues’ Voodoo Lounge in Hollywood Feb. 20.” - The Beach Reporter - Shaun Hague

About Hard Fall Hearts

Hailing from San Diego County this Punk/Rockabilly outfit is here to stay through the blood, sweat, and tears! Hard Fall Hearts sound is both dark and distinct yet reverent to the roots of Rock-n-Roll.

Front man Bryan Kelly, formerly of The Handsome Devils writes from the heart while still maintaining a hard edge. His haunting melodies captured the attention of 'Rocket' and 'Baby Bats' formerly of Johnny and the Blades, Josie Kreuzer, and The Del Fi's. With the manic slapping style of Rocket uniquely complimenting the steady, hard driving back beats from b.b.bats, the rhythm section was complete.

Playing a show 24 hours after their first rehearsal in March of 2008 these boys knew they were firing on all cylinders. In fact, that in itself motivated the title 'last 24 hours' for their full length debut album released in October 2008.

As always pressing the pedal to the metal these boys have been playing great SoCal venues such as Belly Up Tavern, The Derby, Crash Mansion, Canes, and The Viper Room. Energetic and raw, their live show is guaranteed to make you wanna hang on for the ride. This being said, these boys are definitely a band you'll wanna keep your eye on. Making friends and fans one show at a time, Hard Fall Hearts are sure to turn any dull day into a wild night!! For more information, go to www.myspace.com/hardfallhearts.

About Last Chance for Animals

The performance is a benefit for Last Chance For Animals, which was founded by Chris DeRose in 1984, and originally focused on ending pet theft through investigations, education, and outreach. Over the years, LCA has grown and broadened its focus to include all areas in which animals are abused.

Through the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), LCA works to obtain revealing video and photographic documentation of abuse against animals. We believe that the media, and most specifically television, represents the best tool for educating people about the issues that affect animals. - Yvette Lopez
