Biography

I am a songwriter who draws on experiencing both the surface and depths of life. Original songs, interesting tunes, a mix of prog, indie and contemporary styles. Keyboard based instrumentation with strong but varied vocal style. I like to sing about the hidden depths of life...about dreams... about stories, as well as the nitty gritty of being human.
I originally started writing and recording songs 15 years ago and had an album produced in London in 2007. Life events took over and I'm just picking up the music again with some new songs and getting gigs - I had one in Kendal last week which seemed to go down very well, and the new songs went down the best which bodes well... I'm looking for the chance to showcase these wherever I can and I am putting a new album together…. Hope you might give me the chance to perform my songs.

Lyrics

Above the Ground

Written By: Phil Goss

Above the ground you fly, above the clouds;
issuing sound, like a cockerel.
Down below, on the ground, life goes on,
like the clanging sound of a bell that’s broken

Feed me! Feed me! I can’t breathe unless you give me back myself.
Feed me! Feed me! All I ask is that you take away the burden of waiting.

I can’t see you – but I hear you,
as you lift and circle around the Earth.
In my garden there are plants that grow,
but the beanstalk is in a thousand pieces.

Feed me! Feed me! Give me water fast before I curl up brown & sleep forever.
Feed me! Feed me! A smell would be enough to bring me back from the dark plantation.

Meet me! Meet me! I’m climbing up the beanstalk though my arms & legs
are aching. Meet me! Meet me! You will not come down halfway so I can take what I need.

And while I was up in the clouds I got a hint of what I was missing - the woman showed me the dead man’s body, rotting slowly by the castle gates.

Meet me! Meet me! Will she still be there at the bottom of the beanstalk?
Treat me! Treat me! Tell me that these feelings of “If you dare” will
have departed.

I’ll let you know if they have when I get back there, and show her the beans upon the table; and when she’s thrown them out the window and next day another beanstalk scrapes the sky.

Mine Inner Clothing

Written By: Phil Goss

Why do you say nothing, nothing at all?
There are things to say but I sit there
And I have no way of unbiting my lip
It has me in its grip
But over the fence across the bridge
I will have it probably, probably

And mine inner clothing wears me on it
I wear it on the outside inside out
Inside it hangs out and catches
On the sharp nails and ugly open mouth of doubt

Why do I wait for something to fall out of the sky
That would wake up the sleeping, dozing, snoring, trembling
Grunting, questing, running Self within
I’m stuck with its engrained nearly knowing -ness
Signposts floating all around me
Pointing here there and everywhere
And I will have it really
My inner clothing wears me on it

Glow without fear glow without fear
And notice what glows (repeat)

Why do I find myself running for my life?
Ahead on the pavement the membrane of life as a now
Is caught out by its complacent assumption of my confusion
Suddenly I’m angry and demand that it let me catch up with it
and with both hands wrestle it, wrestle it to the ground
I have caught life at last and I hope the condition will last
And I will wear my inner clothing

Wear it inside and outside
Granting myself permission
To say what I mean, meaning enough
To be worth the effort of all
This ridiculous struggle
To throw off the jacket
Of this overdone baked potato

Singing My Backbone Out

Written By: Phil Goss

Under the dust where the buffaloes roam
The trampled fragments of my backbone – lie

Singing my backbone out
Slinging my flat stone out
Across the water

Flapping my magpie wings I’m on the ground
Scrabbling at the dust until I’ve found – bone

Singing my backbone out
Slinging my flat stone out
Across the water

And I sing, and I wail, attempting beauty
And the base that holds my back together, grows

Singing my backbone out
Slinging my flat stone out
Across the water

Vertebrae form, fuse and join stitch by stitch
Flesh renewed I have flown from bird to man
And stand up straight under the sun
Well, a new shell

Singing my backbone out
Throwing my lassoo out
From the stain-glassed window

Singing my backbone out
Watching the buffalos go
Across the border

Tip it

Written By: Phil Goss

Tip it, tip it, over the edge; Tip it, tip it, over the edge

The sun comes in front of me, over the edge
Above the edge of things rising, over the edge
The stars fade in and out and over the edge
The moon is up there too above the edge
Sleeping clouds, and leaping cows, above the edge

Tip it, tip it, over the edge; Tip it, tip it, over the edge

The echo returns again and again around the edge
Bouncing round the sky, across the edge
Grease drips from the wheel
Spin the sparkling steel around the edge
Spin it till I feel, spin it till I feel, spin it till I feel, I’m touching the edge

If you listen there’s something ringing over the edge
Bells that ding with flappy birdsong over the edge
Something darker underneath, under the edge
Under coal and under sedge, lining the edge
Call for listening, call for listening, call for listening, over the edge

Tip it, tip it, over the edge; Tip it, tip it, over the edge

Fleas are swarming, near to the edge
People are crawling back from the edge
We are surely uncertain, where is the edge?
Curtain calling we are walking nearer the edge
Cast your line, cast your line, cast your line, over the edge

Bring it, bring it, bring it, back from the edge; Bring it, bring it, bring it, back from the edge

We are surely uncertain, where is the edge?
Curtain calling we are walking nearer the edge.

Lights Go On

Written By: Phil Goss

Lights Go On

Write about it, the way we all hide and seek
The slightest flick of a moving shape we start to peek
We raise our heads, remember where we are
And look out, cross the sea
Lights go on, flags come out
Lights come on, flags come out
Here we are, remember
Here we are, remember
Us two flowers, you grew in the light
I in the dark, on stony ground
But I still look to see you face
Each time you turn around
---------------------------------------------------------------------
I looked out through the window and saw
The merest glint of a running shape on the shore
I raised my head, remembered where I was
And put my mobile down
Lights go on, flags come out
Lights come on, flags come out
Here we are, remember
Here we are, remember
Now you and I grow alongside
Each other’s hearts
Despite it all, despite
The gap so wide
---------------------------------------------------------------------
We walked out of the city and found
Thousands of flowers and bones on the ground
We raised our heads, remembered: here we are
And put our mobiles down
Lights go on, flags come out
Lights come on, flags come out
Here we are, remember
Here we are, remember
Sleep, sleep we fight the sleep,
let’s keep ourselves alive
Deep, deep we work to mine
The diamond to survive
Remember, Here we are, remember
Here we are, remember.
