"DISClaimer: Sizzling Music For a Hot Summer"

DISClaimer: Sizzling Music For A Hot Summer

Robert K. Oermann • June 26, 2013

Hot enough for you? Summer weather has arrived in Middle Tennessee a little later this year, but no less muggy and oppressive than usual. Appropriately, our disc makers are turning up the heat as well. In this column, you’ll find outstanding work, tailored to the season, from Craig Morgan, Tim McGraw, Philip Claypool and Mark McKinney. The duet of Sherry Lynn and Crystal Gayle is also cooking with gas. Our Disc of the Day award goes to a non-summer themed outing, “I Miss You” by The Henningsens. These three folks sound starward bound with this dynamic single. Sidewalk Records is a Curb imprint that is introducing our DisCovery Award winner, a promising singer-songwriter named Dylan Scott. So bon voyage to him.
PHILIP CLAYPOOL/Strong One?Writers: Philip Claypool/Jeff Silbar; Producer: Michael Lloyd; Publishers: Heyday/Silbar, BMI/ASCAP; Heyday?-This former Curb artist of the 1990s is back with a chin-up, positive-think rocker. I love his drawling phrasing on this driving, relentless production. The icing on the cake is that it is extremely well-written.

PHILIP CLAYPOOL/I’m Gonna Lie?Writers: Gary Hannan/Ira Dean/Aaron Baker; Producer: Michael Lloyd; Publishers: Gary James Hannan/Little Biscuit/Chobe/Sony-ATV Tree/Hillbilly Rich/Skymonkey, BMI?-The grinding, distorted, screaming rock guitars are hugely irritating, but his vocal performance is solid, and the song’s a winner. - Robert Orman

Bio

It’s always thrilling to hear a great singer making the record he’s been waiting to record his whole life, and that’s exactly what Philip Claypool is doing right now.

“This is the finest work I’ve ever done,” Claypool says in a telephone interview. “I just feel so good about the music, and I’m at a really great place in my life both personally and spiritually.”

You can sense Philip’s excitement and passion immediately when listening to the music he’s recorded in Nashville with multi-platinum producer Michael Lloyd.

For the first time, Claypool says they are building the musical tracks around the singer and the song, not the other way around. Philip even invited close friends to come hear him record his vocals to make the studio feel more like a performance environment.

“This is a country record,” Claypool says. “I’m from Memphis and I’ve had many influences on my music. They’ve made a real mark on my vocal style. I believe I’m singing the best I ever have.”

Producer Michael Lloyd, agrees. “Philip has one of the best voices I’ve had the opportunity to record. He touches you with his talent and passion.”

Claypool’s songwriting gifts also shine brightly here. He wrote the bulk of the material on the new record, often collaborating with Grammy-winning pal, songwriter Jeff Silbar.

“My songs are based on personal experience,” Philip says. “Sometimes I dream ’em. `New Kind Of Love’ came to me in a spiritual way when I woke up on a Sunday morning.”

Some of the songs actually began when Claypool heard a phrase at a party or at a bar, imagined rich stories and characters, and then created wonderful songs. “I like writing in images and emotions,” he says, and you can see and feel that in his music.

Premier Nashville session players including Brent Mason and Paul Leim added their own magic to the tracks.

“Everyone calls me a country artist,” Philip says, “But what I am really, is a Southern singer and songwriter. I’m as Southern as the day is long. I was raised and brought up there. I just returned from a duck hunting trip back in Arkansas and it sure felt like home.”

Another homecoming in a way came from Michael Lloyd. He and Claypool had known each other for some time, but didn’t have a chance to really create something until now.

“Michael reached out to me,” Claypool remembers. “He said, `I’ve been thinking about you, Philip. I can’t get your voice out of my head! You need to be on the radio!’ ”

And speaking of radio, Claypool enjoys and has appreciation for many of today’s country artists like Jason Aldean and Brad Paisley, but doesn’t hesitate to voice his continuing adoration for lifelong heroes George Jones, Carl Perkins, and Johnny Cash, as his roots still run deep.

Philip can’t wait to tour with this new album and sing his songs. He’s excited about being on stage and touching the audiences with his music.

Keep a lookout for Philip Claypool. To quote one of his songs....He’s a Strong One.
