Bio
Phil Karis, born on June 22nd 1984 and raised in a town called Roermond in The Netherlands. My dad had a guitar shop until I was around 3 years old, so I grew up surrounded with music and the sound of the guitar in particular. The guitar always appealed to me, the sound, the appearance, but I was always scared when my dad played the guitar very loud. I would sit there covering my ears or simply walk away.
Nevertheless when I reached the age of 11 I picked up the guitar myself and my father taught me the basics. I practised everyday, sometimes for hours in a row. When I was 12 or 13 I formed a band with my best friends, who all happened to pick up a different instrument at the same time. We had lots of fun playing together and we learned so much.
In the years after that I played several times in High School, which later became a cover band. In 2004 I attended the Jazz Conservatory of Maastricht, but I soon found out that wasn't the place to be. In 2005 I finished a 10-track demo-album called "Not What It Seems". I wrote all songs and recorded the album with the help of some musicians in my small home studio. On April 4th 2005 I presented the album with a live performance.
In September 2005 I went to LA for 4 months to attend Musicians Institute. It was a great experience and I learned a lot. I really would like to go back...
Lately I've been doing some local gigs, writing songs and recording them in my 'bigger-than-before' home studio.
My biggest influences: Robben Ford, Larry Carlton, Phil Keaggy, Steve Lukather / Toto, Steely Dan, etc.
My style is a mixture of: pop, blues, jazz, rock, jazz-fusion and funk.
