"New and Noteworthy, Billboard Magazine"

Previously part of the duo LaRue with his sister Natalie, singer/songwriter LaRue makes his solo debut with this intimate, insightful collection. These songs were tracked live in the studio to old-fashioned 2-inch tape, and taking an organic detour in a high-tech world works well for LaRue's personal, vulnerable delivery. Listening to the tender love song "Don't Be Deceived" feels like watching a soul laid bare. Other highlights include vibrant opener "Chasing the Daylight"; the brilliant, confessional "Running So Long"; and the hopeful honesty in the closing track, "Mountains High Valleys Low." —Deborah Evans Price

"About to Pop: Phillip LaRue"

Questions With Phillip LaRue:
Your official bio says you were an athlete until age 16. Do you ever wonder what life would have been like had you stuck with sports?

Heck yeah. I actually have a problem of overtly thinking past decisions, wondering what would have happened if I took a left instead of a right, and what have you. You know this life is almost like a snowball that you start rolling, but before you know it, it’s rolling you. But as it stands, I feel pretty blessed to be right here where I am today. I have never loved music more in my life and every time I pick up the guitar, I know how lucky I am to be able to do this.

What was it like growing up on the road?

It was a beautiful mess. We were so young and my family didn’t have a clue what we were doing. But we had some lovely times traveling and seeing places I never imagined seeing. One thing that was hard for me at the time was missing out on the high school experience. All my friends thought what I was doing was so amazing, but deep down inside I wished I were in their shoes. Looking back now though, we had a blast and I wouldn’t change a thing as far as how things played out.

What was the transition like from songwriter and producer to being a solo artist in the spotlight?

The biggest struggle I had was really defining my sound as an artist. I love so many styles and since I have been able to write for and produce so many different artists, it took me a while to figure out what I wanted my record to sound like. I actually took some time and ended up re-listening to the albums that I loved while growing up. That helped me ultimately in the studio when it was time to record.

Who are your musical idols?

Bob Dylan, Elton John, Miles Davis, Neil Finn.

What do the tattoos on your arms say?

My left arm says, “Lia is the song of my heart.” My Right arm says, “Your love is the music of my life.”

Is it weird hearing your music on popular TV shows like 'One Tree Hill'?

It was a really strange but extremely fun. When I write, I see pictures playing out behind the words so it has been fun to get some TV and film placements. I love watching how they mix the songs with what is happening.

Bio

Young but uniquely experienced, Phillip LaRue has an admirable grip on how to live, and the proof is written all over his debut solo album, Let the Road Pave Itself. An organic set of songs for the digital age, it warmly captures the sound of Phillip and his friends playing real time rock that’s only ever concerned with life’s deepest matters of love and faith. A Californian athlete until sixteen, he picked up the guitar after an injury. His Musical interest turned into a duo with his sister, Natalie, and they scored a record deal in Nashville. Three albums and four years of touring followed. LaRue, as the group was known, charted several pop hits until Natalie married. Phillip moved to Florida and produced indie acts like Over the Rhine and Dave Barnes. Now, back in Nashville, he has produced for Tenth Avenue North and pens hits for singer/song-writers.
