Full Length CD “Breathe” Review written by: Mario Perotti (Powerslave.com)
Several years ago when Phrenik was just a rumor and vocalist dB and guitarist Amp started playing music together (incidentally the band also features bassist Doug and drummer Joel), the future disc they would produce wasn’t even a thought. Now, several years and too many good shows later, Phrenik comes forward with this monster disc that shoots straight to the heart of what this band can produce. Mixing those hard edged riffs in with dB’s deeper vocal style that caves into the aggressive scratchy side occasionally, Phrenik’s number one talent shines first here. That talent would be the band’s innate ability to write insanely catchy songs that shoot right to the point and make their statement without belaboring the bottom line. It’s this formula that makes “Breathe” a disc that screams mainstream and yet, holds those edges that will draw the fringe heavy crowd. Diving into the disc itself, the production is well done (drawing in the heavy end while never losing Amp’s blunt turned crisp guitar line). With the songs themselves, each works its own personality and approaches “potential hit” status, with “Make Me Beg”, “New Friend” and “Bleed For Me” striking the proverbial gold. No doubt about it, Phrenik brings just about everything to table with this recording, offering the heavy guitars and yet planting that memory seed in the head with dB’s vocal work. This is a long awaited effort that cashes in on what the band needed for sure. Very well done indeed.
Full Length CD “Breathe” Review written by: Carissa Gragg (Alive & Kickin)
"I've been listening to music for longer than I can remember, and in all that time, there are two things that never fair to make me happy: 1) when a band in a genre I normally don't listen to surprises the hell out of me in a good way; and 2) when a CD sounds just as good through my lousy car speakers as it does through my nice home stereo speakers. With the reacen'tly released album, Breathe, Phrenik accomplishes both. When I think 'hard rock band', I think uddied, unintelligible vocals and a wall of guitars, bass, and drums performed at a predictiably loud volume with a predictably contast tempo. I was not expecting the incredible level of orchestration and musicianship that Pherenik demonstrates on Breathe. Lead singer dB's vocals could be clearly heard and understood over the rest of the band, with the music arranged in a way that helped to emphasize his vocals instead of forcing them to compete with the band. Sounding a bit like Godsmack, Phrenik's use of tempo, density, and dynamics is on a level with any of the great musicians in recent memory, in any genre. All in all, Breathe is an album Phrenik should be proud to have made

Sacramento News & Review Writers Choice Award: (Sept. 2003) “Best Live Band”
Sometimes, one wonders where the English language gets its descriptors. Take the idea of a “live music show.” The problem here is “show,” a term that so often seems wasted on lackluster bands performing yet another gig at yet another venue. But all it takes is a band like local hard alternative act Phrenik to remind an audience what a “show” is all about. The band comes on stage with a ferociousness and confidence that one seldom sees in a local live act, and immediately engages the audience. It’s usually a big show in a little venue, and that’s exactly what live music should be.
Sacramento News & Review article written by: Christian Kiefer (July 2003)
Phrenik (www.phrenik.com) is a local act that is firmly positioned in the hard-alternative category and, as such, brings up many of the issues associated with both alternative rock and corporate radio. On a bill including Circle of 5ths and Soulmotor, Phrenik ran through a full set last weekend at the Boardwalk in front of a mostly teenage audience. The effect was akin to seeing a large-scale rock show transplanted to a smaller venue. First, the audience was warmed up with a hip-hop trio, which allowed the band a few moments to compose itself backstage. Unlike most rock acts in town, which tend to wander about onstage for a few minutes before they actually begin playing, Phrenik’s members mounted the stage all at once and in darkness, picked up their instruments and kicked into their set like rock stars. The effect of this--and the effect of Phrenik’s entire set--was that of a professional alternative-rock band punching out a high-quality set to an enthusiastic audience. The lights, sound and audience response all coalesced into a solid show, one that left the audience thirsting for more. Phrenik could be imagined playing the same set on a national stage with much the same results. The success implicit in this also underscores the fact that the band’s sound is perhaps too familiar at times. dB’s vocals are solid enough, Amp’s guitars are melodic and driving, and the rhythm section (Doug on bass and Joel on drums) holds everything together nicely. *Nick Monroe (2pm-6pm DJ / KWOD 106.5. Sac, CA) (916-448-5000)

“It’s all about the show for me. Most bands sound good in the studio, but they have to be able to pull it off live. You guys rocked up there, you seem really at home with your performance”.
*Mike Shu (Account Executive / 92KSJO, San Francisco, CA) (415-356-5837)
