Where are you from?
I am from Morehead City, North Carolina. Carteret County better known as the 252!

What style of music do you make?
I make hip hop music intertwined with a lot of old school funk.

What made you want to start music?
My counsin got me hooked on hip hop music. After listening to artist like Nas, Tupac, Big L, Biggie, Outkast and Rakim the love just continued to grow.

Was music a big part of your childhood?
Yes music was a big part of my childhood. My other brother listening to the Gapp Band, Earth Wind and Fire, Rick James, The P Funk. That’s all I heard growing up.
Is there anything that influences your sound?
My influences come for the era of the Funk with 90’s hip hop. I am all about telling stories as well as making people have a good time dancing and feeling good.
Is there anyone you look up to when it comes to music and if so why?
I would say that I look up to Nas, Tupac, as to the they always talked about real life issues and what’s going on in the world today. I also look up to Outkast, because they dared to be different and create something new. I am all about being different but being me.
If you could send one message though your music to the world what would it be and why?
The message through my music that I would send is that always follow your dreams, never give up, be yourself, be a leader and never let any tell you that you can not do something in life. I would definitely promote “World Peace”.
What can we expect from you in the future?
In the future one could expect nothing but good music that people can relate too and have a good time. I have other artist on my album that will be out soon independently “Follow Tha Phunc”. You can be on the look out for them as well: H2O, JBabyy, KCutt and more.

"5 Minutes in the Dirty South"

5 Minutes with... PRETTYGOOD!!

For many years, especially in the 80s and early 90s, hip-hop was dominated by the East Coast… and then the West kicked down the door and made noise in a loud and well respected way. But the south, Dirty South, to be exact, had to create their own lane when there wasn’t even a door presented to them.

People like Master P hustled CD’s out of his trunk and created No Limit Records, he was a huge attribute to the south’s start up. Many artists contributed, U.G.K., Uncle Luke, Timbaland, Missy Elliott, Ludacris (DTP) and so many more paved the way and added more lanes for southern artists to express their own unique version and sound of hip hop-Salute!

North Carolina rapper, Mardell Miller, also known as PRETTYGOOD, has paid his dues and continues to do so as he fights to do what every aspiring rapper wants to do … WIN!

Dina’s Den got to know this up and coming rapper who has no problem flying/driving/bussing it from state to state just to be in a showcase or perform at a lounge with the dirty south flow. His hustle is endless and commendable. Allow us to introduce Prettygood!

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN RAPPING?
PRETTYGOOD: I have been rapping seriously since 15.
WHO INFLUENCED YOU TO GET INTO RAP?
PRETTYGOOD: When my cousin moved from New York to North Carolina, he had me listening to Rakim, Big L, Run DMC, Big Daddy Kane, EPMD, L.L., Fat Boys, Kwame, Nas, Tupac, Lost Boyz, Red Man and the list goes on!

WHAT WAS THE FIRST RAP ALBUM YOU BOUGHT?
PRETTYGOOD: Slick Rick the Ruler.

WHO WOULD YOU LIKE TO WORK WITH?
PRETTYGOOD: I would definitely love to work with Kanye West, Jay Z, Timbaland, 50 Cent, Dr.Dre, Snoop, T.I. and that list goes on as well.

WHO, IF ANYONE, ARE YOU COMPARED TO?
PRETTYGOOD: I am most compared to OutKast, Flo Rida, Pitbull and even Jay-Z at times due to how I come off on different tracks.

THE DIRTY SOUTH HAS A UNIQUE SOUND AND FOUGHT HARD TO PUT THEMSELVES ON THE MAP. WHO DO YOU ATTRIBUTE THAT TO?
PRETTYGOOD: Everyone who came out of the dirty… the whole Dungeon Family, No Limit, DTP, UGK, Chamillionaire, Ghetto Boyz, BME click. The Dirty has been influenced and enhanced at the same time. It continues to be the same way as other emcees emerge.

WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON NOW?
PRETTYGOOD: At the moment I am working on a couple of projects with my homie J-Bird Productionz out of Reno , new album with JStubbs Music , a mix tape with DJ Robz1 and I continued to collaborate with other producers overseas.

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF HIP HOP TODAY?
PRETTYGOOD: Hip Hop today. I can say that as the world continues to grow along with the people Hip Hop will probably go places that we could not imagine. There is so much creativity that I don’t think anyone can say what it is or where will go or end. But I can say that a lot of artists are making good music. When you think of hip hop to me it was a DJ, Emcee and some dancers back in the day and it was based on lyrics and how you delivered them. Now you have different aspects of Hip Hop and it continues to grow!
WHATS NEXT FOR YOU?
PRETTYGOOD: I’m getting more work done in the studio, a lot more performing, a lot more networking, continue to build my brand(Hidnjulz). Like the 3 rappers I mentioned and including 50 Cent, they have built empires with what they have done. That’s what I want- to build an empire. So I am doing what I got to do and put it in the hands of the man upstairs and let it ride!

Bio

Born and raised Mardell Walter Miller, Jr. by his mother who also raised two more men of her own, plus her sister’s children, which made our household very interesting in Morehead City, North Carolina.  The youngest by far with other brother and sister by more than 10 years Phunc Milla range of music went from the O’Jays, SOS Band, Earth Wind & Fire, Gap Band, The Parliaments and Charlie Wilson.  Music would play all the time in the Milla household.  Phunc Milla’s first time hearing hip-hop, came when his cousin moved from New York, to North Carolina.

KRS-One, Rakim, Furious Five started Phunc Milla’s love for the music.  From that point on, Phunc did not do anyting that he would not recite lyrics at the same time.  Once other artist emerge like Nas, Tupac, Nortorious B.I.G, OutKast, A Tribe Called Quest and The Roots, his love grew even stronger, thinking how he could reach the level as those that influence.  From emcee battles in the High School hallways; teaming with some emcees in college, Phunc Milla’s style seems different and did not follow the norm.  After college, Phunc Milla lived in Washington D.C. with his grandmother.  She did not like rap music, but she did like listening when a song of Will Smith came on.  Phunc’s grandmother stated that, if he is destine for the music industry, “please make it so everyone can enjoy it.”

Phunc Milla went through different phases searching for his unique sound.  Now Phunc believes that he has found it and is sharing it with the world.  Performing throughout North Carolina; Georgia (Atlanta); Reno, Nevada; New York City, Alabama and Washington D.C., Phunc Milla is definitely on a mission spreading his sound and brand.  Phunc Milla is always in the mood to learn, so he is just not an artist, but he is also a businessperson.  With understanding the business, he knows will provide him longevity in the music industry.

Phunc Milla released several independent albums on his own as well with a group! Phunc teamed up with a couple of producers, J Stubbs Music and J-Bird Production for most of his projects.  So he definitely understands that you cannot do it all by yourself, it does take a team of people who have chemistry and dedication. Phunc Milla hopes that the world can relate, understand and self-reflect from his music.  Music is life for Phunc Milla, and he knows that music is life for others.  Whether a person is happy, sad, joyful or just going through the motions, music provides that message that there is a light in everything.   The squad conist of Street Fundz Ent, Hidnjulz Publishing, Back2Wax, Smash Junkies and J Stubbs Music so prepare for a lot of awesome music.
