Navi & Picnibus is a highly energetic, five person arrangement of rolling, electric breakdowns involving crude and diverse harmonies of trip-hop and rock. A tornado of funk with knowledgeable swells to calming distortions that are both creative and daring. The lead vocalist, Navid Azeez, is especially commendable for his gritty, energetic and immensely entertaining interactions with the other members of the band, but especially the audience; “I'm going to take a walk and sing to a bartender”, making the entire restaurant his stage. “I don't have to follow these f*ckin' rules, I'm gonna sit with you” he tells the audience between songs, and they absolutely love it, returning the cries of “Picnibus!” throughout many songs which helps to enforce that they will never forget the name of this engaging quintet that can literally make the sound of music melting with their instruments. - TrumpetMouse.com
...But for me the act that completely stole the entire weekend had to be EyeQ’s Sunday set. I’ve seen him perform before, and he’s always good, but this time he was joined by Navi and Picnibus. The first couple of songs they did were completely improvised, then they performed several of EyeQ’s songs with improvised music behind them. They just completely destroyed; they quite literally rocked the stage, especially when they were joined by tons of guests, including Mega Ran, Richie Branson, Sky Blue, Orlando Super, and more. It’s almost always better when artists can be joined by a live band, and Picnibus fully demonstrated that during this set. I’m really disappointed that I missed their set for the Day After, but at least I got to see their brand of funky hip-hop at some point. Picnibus (n) [pik-nuh-buhs]. A psychedelic punk hop outfit, established in 2015, and hailing from the Nation’s capital. Known for their eccentric stage energy, no holds barred instrumentation, and stream of consciousness lyrics, Picnibus embraces a range of influences - spaghetti western pulp twang; bizarre hyper-rock orchestration; science fiction neo noir jazz; uneasy disco grunge; and good old fashioned boom bap hip hop, to accentuate their distinct style of original songwriting.
At the center of this clatter, Sri Lankan-American vocalist/emcee navi spins conceptual yarns on the mating habits of honey bees, how to properly eliminate one's accent, funding Latin in public schools, the advantages of clean jeans, and - of course - how to throw a whizbang picnic. Picnibus also features Stephen Baker on bass, Nick Wilby on guitar, Will Sautter on keyboards/saxophone, and Dave Ray on drums.
