Peyton (Nicole Denise Peyton) and Twisted Mary (Rachel Sarrano Winograd) met as students while working on a cabaret together at George Mason University. They are both natives of the Northern Virginia, DC metro area and grew up in that rich cultural melting-pot.

In 2011 they began meeting regularly just to hang out, improvise, jam, and write music. After Twisted Mary took some time off to have a baby, they officially formed Pictures Of The Dark and began writing new original material and learning covers for performances at local open mics. The band is influenced by an eclectic bunch of musicians, including but not limited to: Elton John, Madonna, Tori Amos,The Beatles, Regina Spektor, Cyndi Lauper, Barenaked Ladies, The Eurythmics, Michael Jackson, David Bowie, Gossip, Cee-Lo Green, Gwen Stefani, and Kate Bush.

In Spring 2012 they became members of the Songwriters Association of Washington (SAW) and Washington Area Musician's Association (WAMA.)

In September, 2012 they were featured as part of a SAW variety showcase.
In November, 2012 they released their first EP, "The Black EP" through CD Baby. They also released their first ever music video on youtube. And became members of BMI.
In December, 2012 their album became available through iTunes and amazon.

Plans are in the works for a mini tour of the Mid-Atlantic region in Spring and Summer 2013. The group is also currently working on their sophomore album, and hopes to have it out for the public by this September.
