Pippa Drysdale is a folk-pop artist who writes the kind of songs that reach into your chest and flick your soul. Disarmingly personal, poignant and little left of centre, her music has been described by the Sydney Morning Herald as “wincingly honest”, by Groove magazine as "entrancing" and by Drum Media as "a sweeter slice of Fiona’s Apple". We'd love to tell you were she was from, but we're not really sure - born in South Africa and raised somewhere between Australia and Zimbabwe, it seems that she did most of her growing up on aeroplanes.

She has been likened to Suzanne Vega, Natalie Merchant, Jewel and Joni Mitchell - but then she's also been likened to a good bottle of scotch, so comparisons can really only go so far. She has played shows in New York, London, Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide and Perth and appeared on numerous radio stations live.

This year (in 2009) she is booked to play the Kintyre Songwriters Festival in Scotland, Bramfest Festival in Hertford, Paddle around the Pier in Brighton, The Aylesbury Festival in Aylesbury and the Beachdown Festival in Brighton.

But back to the story of how she came about...Pippa first began writing songs during a two year stay in New York. She was housebound, so taught herself guitar via the internet. She then returned to Australia where she made her first two releases in a friend’s apartment, initially just so that she’d have something to sell to people at her shows. However, they ended up selling all over Europe (Holland, France, Scotland, Ireland, England, Belgium, Denmark, Sweden, and Switzerland), the States (New York, California, Philadelphia, Oregon, Indiana), Africa, Japan and Canada via the internet. They also earned her a nomination for the WAM song of the year competition, got her some airplay and won her some nice reviews. She played the main stage at The Nannup Music Festival in 2006, the WAMi festival in 2006 and 2007 and was booked to play the main stage at Peats Ridge Music Festival in 2007 (until it was cancelled due to flooding). In 2007 her song "Calamine Lotion Boy" was voted number one on Australia's Triple J unearthed roots chart for 3 consecutive weeks and in 2008, she played London's City Showcase Festival.

All this led Pippa to want to make a “studio” record. So, after meeting with the very talented Michael Carpenter and Matt Fell at Love Hz studios in Sydney, she spent eleven days with them recording eleven songs. One of these songs, "Trick of Destiny", was short-listed for the ASA song competition.

Pippa now lives in London where she's playing gigs and festivals regularly, both in London and in surrounding areas. In August 2009, she will officially launch “Fire in the Snow” in the UK.

The less official version:

I love music. When I was two months old, the only thing that would put me to sleep was Jackson Browne or The Eagles. These days music does the opposite thing - it takes all my attention. I can't even hold a conversation if there's a song playing that I like. This gets me into quite a lot of trouble : ) I also love lyrics, which is probably kind of obvious when you listen to my songs. My music has been likened to that of Natalie Merchant, Suzanne Vega, Fiona Apple and Jewel. I have lived all over the place (Zimbabwe, South Africa, Melbourne, Perth and New York) and currently live in London...I play lots of gigs and festivals and have just finished my first "studio" album. It's called "Fire in the Snow" and you can hear some tracks from it on this page. I'll be launching it in the UK in August 2009. In the meantime, you can also get songs from my other two home-made albums at iTunes if you're looking for them...also make sure to check back here again soon, I'll be giving away a free single or two in the coming months.

Kinda Guy

Written By: Pippa Drysdale

Don’t say I’d know
what it is I’m talking about
cuz’ some things
make more sense to my heart than my mouth.

It sees the truth
before I do, like:

You’re not the kinda guy
to give me a key
you’re not the kinda guy
who cares what I mean
you’re not the kind guy
to sing that song
that I love so much
when the power’s not on.

And I know when you’re scared
from the way that you smile.
And I know that your hair
matches your rising sign.

But you don’t know mine,
don’t have the time, cuz’:

You’re not the kinda guy
to give me a key
you’re not the kinda guy
who cares what I mean
you’re not the kind guy
to sing that song
that I love so much
when the power’s not on.

But I know you could be
everything I want to adore,
if I was someone else,
someone that you loved a bit more

and then you’d see
why it kills me that:

You’re not the kinda guy
to give me a key
you’re not the kinda guy
who cares what I mean
you’re not the kind guy
to sing that song
that I love so much
when the power’s not on.

Fade Away

Written By: Pippa Drysdale

It’s pretty here
this time of year
especially at night.
And there’s a picture
on the wall,
it’s peeling at the edges
from the long, cold nights
And I believe
in words unsaid
I believe in ghosts.
But every time I
pack my bags
they’re the things
I miss the most.

Not even London Rain
can soothe me tonight.
I wanna get on the first train,
I wanna board the first flight,
and watch those pretty, city lights
Fade Away…

I grab a map
and close my eyes
and point to anywhere,
anywhere is fine,
coz’ I am tired,
I need a change,
if I do it consciously is it
still running away?
And I can hear
on the radio
words to a song
I used to know,
now I feel lost
in my own life
if I could I’d make a
deal with the devil tonight…

Not even London Rain
can soothe me tonight.
I wanna get on the first train,
I wanna board the first flight,
and watch those pretty, city lights
Fade Away…

And I can hear
on the street outside,
a conversation about
the status of life,
It’s 3am,
it’s raining hard,
I hear a car door slam,
and the motor start…

Not even London Rain
can soothe me tonight.
I wanna get on the first train,
I wanna board the first flight,
Not even London Rain
can soothe me tonight.
I wanna get on the first train,
I wanna board the first flight,
and watch those pretty, city lights
Fade Away…

Paper Aeroplane

Written By: Pippa Drysdale

And when I think of you
there’s always orange light,
I don’t know where it’s coming from
coz’ it’s always at night.
And when I dream of you
there’s always something small,
that I would love to tell you
but I simply can’t recall

And if it wasn’t Love I was feeling
it was as close to Love as fire is to coal,
Yeah if it wasn’t Love I was feeling
it was as close to Love as fire is to coal.

And we were quite mismatched
right from the start,
you’re an existentialist
always quoting Satre.
But I hope someday
you’re found by destiny
who makes a Paper Aeroplane
and sends you back to me,

Coz’ if it wasn’t Love I was feeling
it was as close to Love as fire is to coal,
Yeah if it wasn’t Love I was feeling
it was as close to Love as fire is to coal.

And you will never see
the way I feel tonight,
I’m the queen of false disclosure
always climbing to new heights.
And I will never see
the part of you I miss,
I guess I never saw it
but I know that it exists,

And if it wasn’t Love I was feeling
it was as close to Love as fire is to coal,
Yeah if it wasn’t Love I was feeling
it was as close to Love as fire is to coal.

Stupid Angel

Written By: Pippa Drysdale

I did it again I made you
think that I was crazy I've been
yelling all night I threw the
remote control clear out the window pane

Hmmm…

And every time you make a
new excuse to help explain away
the way I laugh, the way I cry,
the way I scream in just one day

Hmm mmm

But I'm not some stupid
angel
don't wanna be some
angel
cuz' every single
angel
would just love, love, love
to shed her wings

And sometimes I feel like a
stranger lying in your king sized bed
You try to see me but it's like you
see some movie script instead

Hmmm…

But I'm afraid that my responses are not
scripted for the screen
and I don't even think I want to be
the way you'd have me be

Hmm mmm

Cuz I'm not some stupid
angel
don't wanna be some
angel
cuz' every single
angel
would just love, love, love
to shed her wings

So tell me your stories and I'll
tell you mine
tell me your fears
and I'll listen
but I'm not here to be some
Valentine, although roses
have been known
to make me smile….

So you come home and I say
"honey, did you have a nice day?"
but what I really mean to say
is "can you see the world my way?"

Hmmm….

And it is all of these unspoken questions
living in my mind
that make me act a little crazy
from time to time

Hmm mmm

Cuz' I'm not some stupid
angel
don't wanna be some
angel
cuz' every single
angel
would just love, love, love
to shed her wings

Cherry Blossom Tree

Written By: Pippa Drysdale

Are you a cherry blossom tree
there in Japan,
that blooms for a few days
while the tourists scan?
Or a fireplace that burns
all through the night
and helps me find my way through the dark
as I stumble towards the
light switch?

And will you help me find a reason to believe?
Will you help me find a reason to believe?
Will you help me find a reason to believe
in life again?

Will you talk with me till dawn
and the sun comes up?
And we’ll drink coffee out of bowls
if we haven’t washed the cups up?
And will you freak out when I cry,
I do that a lot,
and when I call at 2am just to say “hello”
will you not even look at the clock?

And will you help me find a reason to believe?
Will you help me find a reason to believe?
Will you help me find a reason to believe
in life again?
Yeah will you help me find a reason to believe?
Will you help me find a reason to believe?
Will you help me find a reason to believe
in life again?
Are you a cherry blossom tree
there in Japan,
that blooms for a few days
while the tourists scan?
Or a fireplace that burns
all through the night
and helps me find my way through the dark
as I stumble towards the
light switch?

Horoscope

Written By: Pippa Drysdale

And I would love to say
“I’m independent, got it all worked out.”
If I could say that babe,
I guess I’d shout.

And I would love to say that
you were just a flicker in the pan,
another place for me to rest my head,
rest my hand.

But I still read
your horoscope
and I still feel
your breath on my back
and I still think
of last time we spoke
and I still want
you back.

’Cos you have coloured me
in crayons that I’ve never seen before,
you took my ceiling and you
promised me it was a floor.
But I am angry ’cos you
told me it was safe to jump,
and when I did all I could hear
was a resounding thump.

But I still read
your horoscope
and I still feel
your breath on my back
and I still think
of last time we spoke
and I still want
you back.

But I will not succumb
to thinking that I can’t do this alone,
what I would give for moss,
I’m sick of being a rolling stone,
and while I tell myself I’m over you,
it’s almost been a week,
my actions scream a little louder
than the words I speak…

’Cos I still read
your horoscope
and I still feel
your breath on my back
and I still think
of last time we spoke
and I still want
you back
Yeah I still read
your horoscope
and I still feel
your breath on my back
and I still think
of last time we spoke
and I still want
you back.
