"Pip Skid – The Pip Donahue Show EP (Peanuts & Corn)"

Pip Skid – The Pip Donahue Show EP (Peanuts & Corn)
By: Thomas Quinlan

The Peanuts & Corn camp has remained somewhat silent for about a year now, but they're back with a free downloadable release from one of their central talents, Pip Skid. For his third solo album since leaving behind the Wicked Nut monicker when Farm Fresh disbanded, Pipi continues to comment on political and social issues, but it's his sense of humour that consistently comes to the forefront. Pipi mocks the mean-mugging of public transit passengers intent on hogging seats on “Busface,” brags about his bike with as much enthusiasm as gangsta rappers give to their four wheel rides on “My Bike,” and makes fun of adults with Peter Pan syndrome on posse cut “Terminal Teen” alongside Derek Diggler, the gumshoe strut, Birdapres and John Smith. P&C head and in-house producer mcenroe is NOT responsible for the beats this time around; instead, all production is handled by the mysterious but talented Thizzy Asper, who does a good job of matching his beats to Pip's gruff vocals and often angry delivery. Overall, the album has a lo-fi, gritty production sound, but Thizzy covers a lot of ground, hitting hard with beats for highlight tracks “My Bike,” “All Sounds,” “Robots” and “Who Are You?”, and mellows things out with some more highlights like “Busface,” “Terminal Teen” and the trip-hop “Lover's Drugs” bonus track taken from Suss's I Ride My Bike LP. There's not really much to skip out of the twelve tracks on this “EP,” including the two very short, experimental interludes “Art Ensemble of Winnipeg Take 1” and Art Ensemble of Winnipeg Take 2.” Hopefully this is a sign of more good things to come from Peanuts & Corn.

Bio

Pip Skid is a prominent Canadian rapper and writer, and a cornerstone of the successful Vancouver based independent hip hop label Peanuts & Corn. Originally hailing from Brandon, Manitoba, Pip (born Patrick Skene) is renowned in underground hip hop circles for his distinctive gravel-throated vocals, as well as his gritty writing style, and fierce delivery. As a co-founder of landmark Canadian hip hop group Farm Fresh, as well as a member of other famed crews such as Fermented Reptile, Hip Hop Weiners, Taking Care of Business, and Break Bread, Pipi has sold thousands of albums while starring on over a dozen albums since 1994, appearing on many more, and touring all over North America. With nearly 16 years of field experience in the independent rap grind, Pipi Skid has risen to international status as one of the most ferocious, unforgiving political MCs on the scene today. His brutally honest, blue-collar anthems have been embraced by the thousands of listeners who feel just like him - he is the voice of the angry, the frustrated, the broke, the tired and the fed-up - whether he likes it or not. Despite his high-energy live shows, Pipi is a reluctant spokesperson. His songwriting reflects his juxtaposing lifestyle of outspoken political MC and anti-social recluse. Pipi Skid began his hip hop career in 1991 when he formed Farm Fresh with fellow Brandonites mcenroe and DJ Hunnicutt. After releasing two albums as Farm Fresh, Pipi formed Fermented Reptile with Gruf the Druid of Frek Sho and released “Let’s Just Call You Quits,” one of the most critically acclaimed Canadian hip-hop releases of all time. In April 2001, Pipi Skid released his first solo record, Friends 4 Ever. This album featured some of Pipi’s most challenging topics to date, including Long Live Bruce Willis, a song that prophesied the US reaction to the incidents of September 11th. In October 2002, the ever-evolving Pipi Skid collaborated with fellow Peanuts & Corn recording artist John Smith for the crunked-up/drunked-up Hip Hop Wieners. Funny Farm, was released in early 2004 and is Pipi’s fiercest project to date. Pipi points the finger at everyone responsible for this f--ked up world, including himself. The Pip Donahue Show was released in November 2007 the new 11 track EP is available for free download at www.peanutsandcorn.com. Backed by the lo-fi, sample heavy production work of Thizzy Asper and with guest appearances from some of Canada’s most ferocious rappers, the Ep was hailed as “easily one of the best local releases of the year.” (WFP)
