"Pistoltown At Marlow's In Vinings"

http://www.gophertunes.com/news/news.php?id=34

VININGS I love acoustic guitars.

Theirs is the most authentic guitar tone ever: What you play is what you hear. Pete Townsend wrote all of The Who's early songs on an old Martin before trying them out with Moonie and the boys.

My mahogany Martin is the best instrument ever made, in my humble opinion.

Nope, nothing can beat a fine acoustic guitar strung with a set of slightly worn-in strings. But acoustics aren't designed for rocking "Whole Lotta Love." If you play acoustic guitar on stage, chances are you're playing a "Whole Lotta Jimmy Buffett." Not that there's anything wrong with that, Parrotheads. It's just the way it is, usually.

But an acoustic guitar band can rock out. Just ask Pistoltown.

Pistoltown is a Nashville-based powerpop trio, but two of the three members often do an acoustic gig at Marlow's. Guitarist Ben trades in his Les Paul for a Taylor 814 acoustic, while bassist Chester plugs his Firebird into a tiny Fender amp, and they put out more than enough sound for the enclosed patio at Marlow's.

Best of all, Ben doesn't let his acoustic guitar restrict him to playing folk covers. I didn't hear a single whiny, introspective song about love lost or dogs run off when I was there Wednesday night. Instead, Ben acted as if he were still playing a Les Paul. The duo hit everything from Guns & Roses' "I Used to Love Her" to Def Leppard's "Pour Some Sugar on Me." They did "Wonderworld" by Oasis, "Beverly Hills" by Weezer, and "Rock Star" by Nickelback. They probably could have done "Whole Lotta Love."

Pistoltown doesn't sit down and look bored when they go acoustic; Ben and Chester spend much of the time jumping around and working the crowd. The audience of women (Wednesday is ladies' night) lost its collective mind when Pistoltown played Violet Femmes' famous singalong "Blister in The Sun." The girls sang many of them screamed every word. Ben told me that "Blister" always gets a warm reception, no matter where they play.

A similar reaction occurred during Sublime's "What I've Got," which turned into a medley that included The Divinyls' "I Touch Myself," Buck Cherry's "Crazy Bitch" and Snoop Dogg's "Gin & Juice." George Michaels' "Faith" and Eve 6's "Inside Out" were also crowd-pleasers.

They've been playing Marlow's for a while, but the entire band Pistoltown (with drummer Zach) will be performing in Islamorada in the Florida Keys during most of the winter. Who can blame them? It's getting chilly in Atlanta.

But they'll be back. Pistoltown will be at Knockin' Boots in Columbus in January and at Fado March 10 and April 5, 2007.

"They're Phenomenal"

http://www.zoominfo.com/people/Gordon_Mason_1095363689.aspx
"They're phenomenal," says Mason Gordon, manager of The Lodge, where Pistoltown performs 10 p.m. Saturday. "It's definitely something different. They're bringing a spark into town."
...
This will be the Nashville-based band's first performance in Clarksville, and Gordon says, "there's a lot of people that are excited about it."

Although Gordon describes them as "alternative," comparing them to Nickelback, Pistoltown's MySpace Web site, www.myspace.com/pistoltown, labels them as punk. - The Leaf Chronicle-Clarksville, TN
