Pitch Union

The band play spacey style rock/metal. The music is kind of trippy, but has a nice smooth edge to it as well. The vocals are sort of alternative, but fit the music. This was different and not your normal stuff, which is a plus for them. The musicianship is good too. The more I played this, the more I appreciated it - Metal Core Fanzine

First let me briefly explain a bit about me. I am not young. My musical taste is literally never ending. I enjoy keeping my music all over the map. One day it will be metal, next day it may be jazz, ambient, blues, or classical. I am a band manager, promoter, music website moderator, and booking agent for two nightclubs. I am also a musician.
I have been writing reviews for various sites or zines for a while now and I suddenly noticed something. All of my reviews have been positive and short of constructive criticism. I began to wonder if I was being too nice, too fluffy.
So I went back over all of my reviews of late and scrutinized myself but soon realized that the answer was quite simple, all of the music I have been reviewing has been top notch and literally void of any negatives that I could find.
However, when Brad from Cyclone Records asked me to review Pitch Unions ‘Mohawk Clock Machine’ I thought o.k. Here’s an opportunity to enter into this review, open minded, ready to listen to this Windsor Ontario band that I had never heard before, prepared to be on alert for anything that may give me an opportunity to show that I can be critical when required.
After thoroughly listening to Mohawk Clock Machine six times from beginning to end all I can say is damn it! I loved it. The first listen had me sitting attentively on the edge of my seat, by the third listen I was in full recline listening behind the face of the music. Yes, as stated in their site, rock, metal, alternative and sounds like Tool, Clutch, Faith no more. I can hear traces of these bands as well. I read somewhere else that someone mentioned Emo? Couldn’t hear that at all.
What I did hear was a lot more than this. I heard traces of Pink Floyd, Metallica, Black Sabbath, Peter Gabriel, as well as half a dozen other influences lurking in the background, quietly weaving themselves through the complexities of the music. If I didn’t know better I could have easily thought Brian Eno had a hand in the engineering of this album.
More importantly I heard a group of musicians that obviously have a huge appreciation and respect for each other and their individual talents. It was not what I was expecting.
Being a drummer myself I was immediately drawn to Aaron’s unique style, which will now have me sitting behind my skins with some new ideas. C-bass and Brandon’s melding of strings and their close connection is intimate and a thing of beauty at times. Together, it is a perfect setting for Paul Taylor’s strong vocals to complete the foundation and it creates a combined vision for the listener to appreciate. They are currently in the studio creating their next work of art and once it is complete it will be released through none other than our friends at Cyclone records. Pitch Union command respect and attention. They have obviously paid their dues and worked the trenches over the years to bring them to this point. I can only see one direction for this band in the future and that is straight up.

So there you have it, for what it’s worth. This is truly a ‘must have’ cd to add to your collection. It will not collect dust; it will remain at the top of your pile for a long time. It will spread its wings to your friends who once they hear it will have to go get it.
My recommendation to anyone who has a chance to see this band while they are still plowing through the local clubs is to go and see them, meet with them, so that one day you can look back and say, “ Hey, I used to chill with those guys before they were huge”.

Pitch Union from Windsor, Ontario serenaded us all on day three with what can only be described as epic compositions that left you in awe. With vocals that would rival some of the biggest names out right now, these guys aren't kidding around. Pitch Union has shared the same stage with Sloan, Bif Naked, Big Sugar, Broadzilla, and even Queens Of The Stone Age; proving that they are fit for the big leaugues of rock n' roll. Having met them after their set, Pitch Union also proved to be the down to earth guys you would epect them to be and you could tell that any success they have had or will have is not being taken for granted.
