"Johannesburg In Flames"

On Saturday night most of the bands were of a very high standard, but there were two that really stood out: Pity The Fool and Dead Alphabet. Pity The Fool, as well as being exceptionally talented when it comes to producing electrifying 70’s-style rock n roll, have a smiling, ebullient, stage presence that makes it impossible for audiences not to love them. Their enjoyment of the music that they make, teamed with the passion with which they play their instruments, is contagious. Of course, lead singer Wim Jansen van Rensburg also resembles Axl Rose in such a way that makes it impossible for any girl to resist the band. - Jessica Dix

"The Most Important New Bands In South Africa Right Now"

Straight out of Pretoria but making alternative pop-rock sounds ready for summer coastal sun. Pity The Fool could have made more foresighted decisions regarding their name, but that is easily countered by the oft-asked, what’s in a name anyway?

This four-piece released their Extended Play EP in 2009 which produced the ‘Shades of Grey’ single which tapped into surprised attention on television and radio airplay.

The band has also realised the creative advantage of working with constant visual member, in the form of Eckardt Kasselman who has done a large amount of the band’s visuals. - RocknRoller

Bio

Pity the Fool, is an established four piece alternative rock n roll band based in Pretoria and has been performing live since early 2008. As lovers of music, the band is influenced by many genres ranging from rock and roll to indie, electro, IDM. Their 2008 debut EP “Extended Play” is thematically dominated by a post punk-rock sound, but no limitations are set to future recordings.

Following the footsteps of live music Pity the Fool uses an essential rock and roll set up with two guitarists, a bass player, a drummer, voice and up and till recently the synthesizer, e-bow and live stream. With a very melodic-anthemic upbeat sound, Pity the Fool rises to the challenge of live performance; by writing music that lends itself to explosive performances.

Pity the Fool recorded a 6 track EP titled ‘Extended Play’ early March of 2008. The EP features guest artist Paul Gioia from The Slashdogs featured on the track “You’re the boss”. The EP also features their single ‘Approaching Destination’.

The single was playlisted on Tuksfm in May 2009 and reached number one position on the SA top 10 for a week later that month.

Shortly after releasing the debut EP, during summer holidays of 2008, the band was selected to participate in the MK Avontoer Coastal Rock Fest and later that month, they were invited by Cape Town mega live music club ‘The Assembly’ to open for Australian electro band “Club Feet”, who graced SA with a show while holidaying in the country. Since then the band has performed with another eight international acts including names such as: C’mon and Kypski (NL), Lucky Fonz III (NL), Philedelphia Grand Jury (Aus), PHDJ, Red Five Point Star (Slov), We Can’t Sleep at Night (Slov), Alkaline Trio (USA), Funeral For a Friend (UK).

During 2009 the band was the first act to play on the newly implemented Levis stage at the Oppikoppi Smoorverlief festival on Saturday 29 August. The band recorded a single during the winter of 2009 at Ground Level studios entitled “We demand dance on earth” and further explored the best in Gauteng province’s venues.

In 2010 Pity the fool released an orange love single entitled "Shades of grey" during the venture of a never before utilized studio Anti Motion studio's and shortly after shot a video which has been on high rotation on South Africa's music channel MK324 as well as play listed on a few regional campus radio stations.

The Single “Shades of grey” then reached number one position on Tuks Fm’s SA top 10 in August 2010.
