"New Motherfuckers @ the Smell May 10, 2007"

THURSDAY, MAY 10: Alex, Duncan, Geoff and Tyler—a.k.a. the New Motherfuckers—came on one act before Softboiled Eggies last Thursday night at the Smell, giggling and horsing around while they tuned their instruments. The crowd didn’t seem to mind: I think we were all fixated on the little sweater vests and tie numbers that the boys were sporting on stage. The sight was the epitome of college kids playing dress-up, and the sound was the epitome of noise pushed toward hysteria. The L.A.-based quartet classifies themselves as “tropical / surf,” which is either hilarious or downright wrong, considering that even from the back of the crowd I could see spastic, theatrical arm flailing that seemed as reminiscent of a grand mal seizure as it was of a surf excursion. With songs like “Hotlanta,” “Dinoboticus” and “Gay Hotel California” (an Eagles “cover”), came the band’s punchy, long-jaw surf-sound antics and the occasional divergent spooky futuristic jazz odyssey. Keyboard weirdness can always make room for an equally bouncy crowd, but as far as I know, spastic and garbled vocals never sounded this good. - L.A. Record
