Charlottetown’s Plain Dirty Blues
Band Lays it Down on Debut CD
by Chris Godwin

The Plain Dirty Blues Band live up to their name. Five Dollar Cover has a raw edgy sound that only a three piece band can provide. Drummer Simon Moore is both
innovative and straight ahead in his approach. He maintains a hard driving beat, with enough twists and turns to keep things interesting. Jason Furness
plays a fat vibrant bass that fills out the sound of this three piece group. Doug Burton's guitar work is fluid, funky and energetic. He sings with raspy raw
conviction.

The album has two originals, both by Doug Burton. The first of these is Unfit. The lyrics left me wondering whether the song is about kinky sex or homicide, and the
music is driven funk/Blues. T-Bone Walker's Stormy Mondayis the next cut. The guitar work is light and jazzy, but when Burton takes the lead, he becomes focused
and intense. Freddie King's I'm Going Down is track number three. The band plays a tight version of this, but to my disappointment they leave out the song's
signature riff. Chunky, by Hubert Sumlin is the next track. This is a guitar player's song and Burton does it justice. I really like the band's choice of covers. They
pick great songs that show they have a knowledge of what is out there. Gallows Hill is the other Burton composition. The title doesn't have much to do with the lyrics,
but I like the song. Got My Mojo Working by Preston Foster (made famous, of course, by Muddy Waters) showcases some great Blues harmonica by Burton. I'd like to hear more of his harp playing. Track number seven is I Ain't Got by Jason Furness. This is a short breezy shuffle and is played with less intensity than the rest of the album. It gives the listener a pleasant break. The last song is Buddy Guy's She Suits Me To A Tee. The band shifts back into high gear for this number;
they play it “Buddy Guy” style.

This is a good driving CD. I played it on my way from Halifax to Truro, and I think I passed everything on the road. Hat's off to The Plain Dirty Blues Band.

Over 100 years ago, in the dust that settled after the American Civil War, the blues were born down in that good ol Mississippi Delta region, far, far away from the shores of our little isle.

A therapeutic outlet to release the frustrations of everyday life through song, the blues were shaped by African roots, by the repetitive rhythms of physical labour, by the souls need to cry out to the almighty and to anyone who would listen.

And listen to it we have as virtually all modern popular music has been influenced in some way by the blues tradition from country, bluegrass, jazz and folk to rock, pop and rap.

If you listen closely, you can hear the blue thread lining through it all.

In light of its important and fundamental presence throughout modern music (and because, lets face it, we all gotta sit back and sing out the blues now and then) it is fantastic to see blues being represented more strongly on P.E.I. in recent years.

The P.E.I. Jazz and Blues Festival is obviously growing in strength as an event, and this years lineup of artists looks to be stellar, as thousands of locals and visitors alike will be taking in some fabulous blues day and night, starting July 5.

And the Island does have some really great blues talent, which all just keeps improving with experience and maturity.

Artists like Scott Parsons, The Blueprints, Joey Kitson and M.J. Mullin and The Rattlesnakin Daddies, to mention a few, are mainstays on the Island blues scene and have all been able to develop their acts to an even greater degree as of late, with the presence of Bourbons House of Blues as an awesome new little venue to showcase local blues and folk music.

But since December of 2006, a new blues band has been steadily taking its foothold on the Charlottetown scene: The Plain Dirty Blues Band.

Playing mostly at Brennans on weekend nights up to this point, the four-piece group consists of Doug Burton, lead vocals and electric guitar, Willie Wagner, guitar, Robbie Mundle, bass, and Este Mundos Simon Moore on drums.

Last Friday, I kicked back with a pint o Keiths in my hand to take in the sounds of their electrified blues, as it poured out of the open bar windows and into the warm city streets.

Belting out blues classics by the likes of Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson, ZZ Top, the Allman Brothers and Howlin Wolf, the band played a three-set night of straight-ahead, no messin around blues.

And obviously the group is doing something right, as the crowd (raging like a cougar in a cage) was the biggest crowd that the bands got out yet.

Sue Burton, the lead singers wife, also got up and did a couple of Tragically Hip tunes at one point (New Orleans is Sinkin and Blow at High Dough), which were quite well received by the crowd so well received, that she was hauled up

later on in the last set to

do the exact same songs again.

Black Cat Bone, After Midnight and Buddy Guys version of Mary Had a Little Lamb were a few other hits that rounded out the night.

Noteworthy trademarks of the band consist of some really great trade-off guitar work by the two electric guitarists, and some bang-on, in-the-pocket drum work by Moore at the kit.

You will certainly be seeing more of these guys in the months ahead. Two particular places to catch them will be back at Brennans during the P.E.I. Jazz and Blues Festival for late night blues on July 6 and then later on in the month on Friday July 20,

for an afternoon performance at the yacht club for race week. - The Guardian

"Plain Dirty Blues at Charlottetown race week"

With the arrival of sultry summer nights, the Charlottetown Waterfront is a popular place to be.
One group taking advantage of this warm weather location is The Plain Dirty Blues Band, who has four gigs lined up at The Charlottetown Yacht Club (CYC) this season.
"It's a natural setting for the blues and there's always a great blues crowd," says Doug Burton, lead singer/guitarist for the group that includes Jason Furness (bass) and Simon Moore (drums) that will perform at the club on July 1, 10 and 25, along with Aug. 15.
The members of the trio became a hit with members last summer when they blasted their music from the club's outdoor deck to boats in the Charlottetown Harbour during race week.
Later as the sun went down, the band's electric blues vibes had everyone dancing until the wee hours.
"So when they mentioned that they had just built a new bar and were looking for some music for the summer I thought it would be a perfect for both of us," says Burton.
At each show, they will perform a variety of electric blues music.
"We'll rip into three sets with breaks in between. Our songbook includes everything from contemporary songs by Stevie Ray Vahn, Jimmy Hendrix, Buddy Guy and The Allman Brothers to blues veterans like Freddie King, Albert Collins, Muddy Waters and Howlin Wolf," says Burton.
The Plain Dirty Blues Band is a perfect summer addition, says CYC manager Lisa MacKinnon.
"They add to the ambience here and lots of people come out to hear them. They were really popular during race week last year," she says of the band that formed three years ago.
"We got together because of our love for the blues and the desire to turn it into something with a rock 'n' roll feel. Doug saw me perform with Scott Parsons in Jupiter Wise and asked me to join the group he was forming," says Furness.
Moore, well known for his work with Paul Bernard in Este Mundo, was a boyhood friend of Burton's. They played together in high school.
"I knew that Simon Moore was back in Charlottetown after working in the United States, so I asked him to join us. I always thought that there was a need for a ripping electric blues band on P.E.I. That's what inspired me to put the band together."
And three years later, he's happy he did.
"Our sound can best be described as high energy electric blues with a little rock 'n' roll thrown in. Besides playing blues classics and recent sounds, we play some of our original material," Burton says.
