Bio

EN.
After an undeniable success and a rich experience within the duo Beast (with Betty Bonifassi), Jean-Phi Goncalves goes back to his roots with his very first band, Plaster. It is in a small and dark studio at the bottom of an obsolete Montreal cellar that the group PLASTER was born in 2001. Formed by Alex McMahon at the keyboards (Daniel Bélanger, Lhasa, Ariane Moffatt) and Jean-Phi Goncalves at the drums (Beast, Dumas, Martin Léon, Afrodizz) the two former music school students wanted to create electronic music using standard jazz instruments. A year later, following an encounter with bassist François Plante (Afrodizz), the duet quickly widened its horizons.

PLASTER’s first album was released in November 2005. It has been co-realised by Cristobal Tapia (One Ton, Jorane) and reached number 1 on electro sales chart at Archambault retail stores across Province of Quebec (2000 units sold since release and steady scans). FIRST AID KIT was also honored at the 2006 ADISQ awards for Best album of the year, electro/techno music.

PLASTER offers an entertaining and organic cocktail of perfectly shaked electronic beats mixed with jazz spontaneity in an infectious “College Jam Band” party atmosphere. Samplers, multi-effects and of course real instruments are tortured to offer ultimate stimuli. Inspired by the music of Amon Tobin, Herbalizer, JazzaNova, Cinématic Orchestra and Medeski Martin & Wood the trio’s biggest strength is the energy captivating audiences to emerge themselves in a new universe of mystical groove. On stage, this drink is served with a strong rock energy and supported by stunning multimedia/visual effects provided by Moment Factory (www.momentfactory.com) including VJ.

PLASTER has done great impression at the 2004, 2005 and 2006 Montreal Jazz Festival playing to captive and dancing audiences of 3K+, and they will repeat this experience in 2006. Quebec City Summer Festival in summer 2006 allowed the band to gain recognition in the electro music scene. In 2007, they presented a showcase to SXSW in Austin and were selected for an M for Montreal showcase featured in Los Angeles (California).

FR.
