When Sam Hoys created Playing Dead in early 2004, he didn’t have a clear vision of what the end result of the project would be. The original conception of the project was to record songs that showcased Hoyos’s songwriting abilities.
After playing in hardcore bands with fellow bass
player Dave Cassell for 3 years, he felt that it was
time for a change. “I started this project while my
old band was on hiatus”, says Hoyos, “and I wanted to play with as many different musicians from as many different genres as possible.” A year later, Playing Dead’s new EP, Making Noise Quietly was completed, which includes Dave Casele and other musicians from Long Island that contributed the recording. As the band evolved and became permanent, so did their sound. With Mike Simenson on drums and MaryEllen DeVaux on co-vocals and piano, expect their sound to be a tad more aggressive, without straying from their acoustic roots.
