"You tie a rock to your leg cuz it fits you (review)"

This band really got off the wrong on the foot with me, mainly because I had to waste time figuring out how to type those two little dots above the “O” in their name. My time is valuable, and need not be wasted with such things. As for the album itself, pretty damn good. This band, which could easily be compared to Primus, definitely brings something new to the indie rock dinner table. And dare I say, it might even be better than Primus.

RATING: FOUR STARS

"Great Danes"

Mikkel Hansen, 24, says he spent his first two years out of high school "getting away from everything that was normal."

"I had a teacher who was always placing creative restraints on me," says Hansen, who plays bass and sings in the Danish garage-punk band, Plök.

"She would say we had to write this essay and discuss these matters, but I would want to do it with poetry or songs. She didn't appreciate that."

The cover of Plök's new EP makes normal look creepy. Across mowed suburban hillsides, men in sweaters hold rakes, women in business suits pet wild animals, children placidly toss leaves in the air. And everyone smiles blandly.

Hansen's own upbringing was hardly normal. "My mother and father were divorced, and they've each had about five marriages since then. I have 10 stepsisters. My father is quite a restless soul."

Fittingly, Plök's new disc concludes with an ode to domestic intranquility titled, "I Do Not Live in a Condo."

Last Friday night, when I talked to Hansen by phone, he was driving in downtown Seattle with five other young Danish musicians, looking for that night's venue. "All the streets are one-way," reported Hansen.

A car radio blared, and Hansen's friends talked loudly in Danish. Hansen handed the phone to Jesper Holm of the indie-pop band, the Spy in the MEs.

MEs?

"It's a word I invented," says Holm, 23. "It's about the spy inside of me, trying to turn in all these different directions at once."

That describes the Spy in the MEs sound, too. Their new album is a Beck-style potpourri of pop.

"I like to go from rock to polka to some really weird punk song," says Holm.

When he's not making music, Holm is a kindergarten teaching assistant in Odense, Denmark. Hansen says he makes a living "playing soccer and telling silly stories" to kids after school.

Hansen and Holm have never been to the United States before. Encountering America, Hansen suggests, is like bouncing on a big trampoline.

"Everything is either a huge jump that is an incredible experience, or it's an accident where you fall off and hurt yourself."

Quite the send-up for the Annex show, no?

"plök - plökumulige (review)"

While their name might be a phoneme, it’s actually from a Danish phrase, ‘Plökumulige’ meaning ‘completely impossible’. Their sound is mathematically brazen, daring, and a smash-up of indie rock, mayhem, metal, and post-punk. Sort of like the Blood Brothers drunk on dance-punk with some Mass Movement of the Moth stirred in for extra zaniness. And yes they’re from Scandinavia just like their moniker. Insane!

Bio

Plök is Danish, taken from the phrase “plök-umulig” meaning completely impossible. However the sounds are not that impossible….

Plök offers an elastic approach to the rock genre fusing elements of post-punk, math, big beat and pop into an original blend, mathbeat synthpunk. Whirlwind rhythms, distorted children’s keyboards, flying guitars, trash percussion and manic vocals are everywhere on this their debut album. In many ways the music can be described as a juicy, somewhat poppy rehash of battles, the blood brothers, crystal castles, lightning bolt, kraftwerk and dillinger escape plan without being anything other than completely its own.

”It sounds like a band virtually playing in a dumpster that's tumbling down some stairs. The funny thing is that the combination of the band members really getting into it and rocking out during the songs, and the retardedly strange behaviour of the singer and bassist Mikkel works like.. well a charm, as the crowd is charmed indeed,...,most people get into it as if it was the most accessible stuff on the radio”

The debut album “sing us yr guillotine gospel” is set to follow the 2007 EP “you tie a rock to your leg cuz it fits you”, an EP that included the Independent Music Award winning song “I do NOT live in a condo”. According to the band you can expect the sound of buildings making out, interrupted TV signals, torn-apart symphonies and spontaneous anti-preaching. Rhythmically! Might sound strange, but it’s actually to the point. The album goes from the polyrhythmic up-beat and frenetic “headlock the urban machine” to the math-dance of “time out the stroboscope emotional” to the kraftwerk-gone-hardcore and big beat’esque “barbra streisand is an island” and ends up with a challenged disco-beat track with a pompous harmonic release on “is there a ripe hype ride right now?”. In short an adventurous, beat orientated, energetic and melodic album quite like no other.

The band has previously played shows with HEALTH and Jaguar Love and has also toured the US on their own in support of the CMJ chart success of the debut EP in 07.
