"Our Daily Bread"

Bringing the soliloquy narrated poetry of the council estate to a wider audience, Poeticat (supported in their endeavour by The Arts Council) launch themselves upon the public with this new double A-sided single. Led by the surly monologues of Catherine Martindale, the polygenesis band – made up of Lisbon, Basildon and London natives – underpin a social message with a mellow backing of fluid bass, cooing experimental choral harmonies and reverberating textures, counterbalanced by a piqued punchline of snarling guitar and increasingly hostile vocal jabs.

‘Centre Of the Concrete Square’ offers a home video like paean on both the growing pains and more ernest charms of life on the council estate. Martindale’s delivery is quite a refreshing one, the closet comparisons, if a tad lazy but true, being The Streets and Scroobious Pip - and to some extent there are even traces of a less irritating, Kate Nash.

The Monolith will definitely be keeping an ear to the ground on this one.

"Poeticat Kind Words Soft Kill"

Spoken word is sometimes misunderstood and a lot of the time put on the back burners of music so we forget about those acts. Poeticat are an act who are looking to take their imaginative spoken word music to new heights, with the release of their double A side, which includes ‘Kind Words Soft Kill’ and ‘Centre of the Concrete Square’, and they’re two songs that should make you take notice.

Obviously in spoken word, it’s about the lyrics, the language and the poetry, but Poeticat have taken special care of the background music too, which really sets the scene and environment for these songs. Spoken word music is often disregarded mainly because it’s not what people are used to listening to, so they immediately turn off, but Poeticat have done such a job on these lyrics and stanza’s that they’re worth taking note off and listening to. Well thought out words, and the timing of the words play an integral part to these two songs, which they’ve done well with and for that alone it deserves credit. Understandably it won’t be at the top of most people’s playlists, but it does deserve a place within that playlist.

"Poeticat announce Windmill Brixton residency and Rooftops free download"

Supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council
Baj Kenrick [Guitar] | Catherine Martindale [Vocals] | Vic Meadowcroft [Percussion] | Ziggi Jadovski [Vocals] | Dr Goat Foot [Bass]
Hailing from London, Lisbon and Basildon, Poeticat are a truly unique proposition; fusing the thought provoking spoken word delivery of Catherine Martindale who has been a prominent figure on the spoken word and poetry scene for sometime with the experimental vocal harmonies of fellow European Theatre Arts graduate Ziggi Jadovski. This alone creates something very original. Now add a surreal and captivating genre-bending melting pot which is given an overwhelming sense of roots and power with the phenomenally warm bass lines of Dr Goat Foot from the Institute of Contemporary Music. Taking the band in another direction is percussionist Vic Meadowcroft on the Cajon who pulls in from Latin American music and African rhythms bringing it all together in a loose yet fluid journey while the prowess of guitarist Baj Kenrick reaches into the songs, burrows under the skin and adds another twist, with complex metal guitar riffs and melodies that call upon Testament to Metallica. This is the true alternative spirit that is so much missing in the current musical climate.
It takes people with real bravery to try to do something with individuality. Spoken word has been creeping into the mainstream in recent years in the eclectic forms of The Streets, Scrubious Pip, Saul Williams and Kate Tempest but Poeticat move it in a completely new direction experimenting with every aspect of the music as well as the vocal techniques and interplay between Catherine and Ziggi, story telling, dance routines and they have also had guest appearances from Nelson ‘Papachango’ Marquez of cutting edge Latin band Los Chinces.
Regulars amongst a diverse circuit they received a 5 star review at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and have played festivals such as Glastonbury, Latitude, Bestival, The Big Chill, Kendal Calling, Beat-Herder, E4 Udderbelly and have supported Kate Nash, Ed Sheeran and Jamie Woon.
A whirlwind live act, you will not have seen anything like Poeticat before.

Bio

With roots in London and Lisbon, Poeticat is an energetic and unique alternative band combining world, rock, spoken word and psychedelic music with a punk attitude.

From infectious grooves and psychedelic ambiance to chugging rock riffs, Poeticat perform with a raw energy that exudes punk attitude.

This polygenic 5 piece give birth to an attention seeking bastard child of songs that could make you ask yourself "What is this?" The answer is a slap in the face to genre definition and boundaries.
Compared to the likes of Ian Dury and the Blockheads, Scroobius Pip and Patti Smith, this spoken word infused unit deliver scathing social references with imagery that flows from urban to surreal.

Smashing their unique sound from Glastonbury to the E4 Udderbelly they have set up camp at The Windmill in Brixton South-London with an Arts Council backed residency extravaganza where they deliver their fast moving energetic live shows to an ever growing fan base of the weird, wonderful and everything in between.

A Cajon that ponds and pulses louder than any drum kit
A bass that fiddles and thumps
Guitars that stroke your ears and then scratch them
A voice that coughs, clicks, grunts and rasps
Words that draw you in, stimulate and push you out

Now you have heard about Poeticat, you need to see Poeticat...
