Sound Off winners named after ECMA Battle of the Bands

(Charlottetown, PE) – The winner of the ECMA 2006 Sound Off Finale is Poles Apart, chosen Wednesday night at the ECMA Sound Off Finale by celebrity judges Kerri Wynne MacLeod, Chris Ahearn and Paul Milner.
Sound Off, an ECMA Battle of the Bands, took PEI youth by storm this winter. More than 20 young bands competed in regional and independent competitions, vying for the chance to play in the Sound Off Finale.
Poles Apart win an official ECMA showcase, location and time will be announced. They also win two days of studio time at David Rashed Audio Productions and passes to all ECMA 2006 events. There was a tie for second place, between Bev Reiger and The Sally Sues and Land for Living. Both second place bands win a spot in the 72+ Hour Jam lineup.
“The talent and energy of the young bands in the Sound Off Finale was incredible,” said Campbell Webster, chair of the ECMA 2006 event committee. “It was a great way to kick off ECMA 2006.”
Poles Apart competed against five other bands at the Sound Off Finale: Clack’azing, One Cent Short, Bev Reiger and the Sally Sues, Land for Living and Gnomus. Fans jammed the Delta Prince Edward ballroom for the show, which included a performance by ECMA-nominated artist Joel Plaskett.
Poles Apart is Trinity Bradshaw (vocals/guitar), Kyle Ellsworth (bass/guitar/vocal), Steve Gallant (drums/piano), Todd Arsenault (guitar/vocal), and Jeremy Arsenault (sax/drums). The band was created to spotlight a rhythm section with original tunes and ideas. Poles Apart combines experience in jazz, heavy rock and pop and ends up with a psychedelic, alternative rock sound.

Kyle Ellsworth and Steve Gallant, two grumpy ol’ session players, have finally pieces together a band to call their own. The band was created to allow for the normally overlooked rhythm section, to be finally noticed with original tunes and ideas. Basically the drive was simply to create music together, whilst including other musicians who just wanna give’er too.
The remaining holes in the band filled quickly. The original duo was seeking an A.D.D driven guitarist, Todd Arsenault, an energetic saxophonist - Jeremy Arsenault, and a fresh voice to soften their edge, Trinity Bradshaw. All of the band members have played together at some point within the last few years, and they knew instantly that working together was what this rhythm section was looking for. The style that came out of the collaboration was nothing that was anticipated, and was initially hard to grasp. Most of the members had a strong background in either jazz, heavy rock, or pop; the fact that they ended up playing psychidelic, alternative-rock was beyond the creators. Having a sound that came out by fluke really gave the band a sense that it was a sound of their own.
The band was formed throughout 2005, and the first recording sessions began in late December. Demo tracks for “Safety”, “Far From Separating”, and “The Story of a Dying Man” finally saw the light after many late and tiring recording stints. The music was not intended to carry any serious topic but more along the lines, of just being a song to listen to.
2006 has already started off with a kick, members are scheduled to play events surrounding the East Coast Music Awards and continue with their everlasting recording sessions. The band plans to continue to write and record, and of course, tour until the show can not go on.
