"Ponder ***"

You can pick up the debut CD (Think About It) of this newly formed Las Vegas group with a fair amount of confidence. Its members all have impressive pedigrees on the local music scene.
Shawn Eiferman, formally of Epstien's Mother, is at the helm on guitar and lead vocals. Eiferman was voted best acoustic guitarist by our readers back in 2000 and regularly hosts a weekly night of tunes at House of Blues.
John Lombardo, who has inked deals with Elektra, Meltdown, and Warner Bros., is on vocals and guitar. Singer and bass player Matt Wood has been kicking around this dusty town for years and Corky Gainsford has been playing with Eiferman in the musical sense for the last seven years.
As for the disc, it's a collection of 11 tracks of three-part harmony and straight ahead rock n' roll with an emphasis on guitars. My favorite? "Tiny Panties" but that is a subject for another time.

Ponder
"Think About It"
(four out of five stars)

Shawn Eiferman has cooked up a new band called Ponder, filled out by scene vets John Lombardo on Guitar, Matt Wood on bass and corky Gainsford on drums. How ironic that the corver art is a tweak on the Wonderbread logo, because Think About It--loose in the hips, glinting with menace and pain, growling with real feeling-- is anything but bland, fluffy stuff.
Think something closer to Clapton than Creed; what we have here are 11 tracks of frills free rock that have both songcraft and soul. Things really get under way with the third track, "After All;" propelled by a splashing, bluesy guitar figure. Even the poppier numbers--the jaunty "Seeing Things" or the hummable "Lionel and Rita" --uncoil with that ardor, that natural tunefulness--above all, that sense of entitlement, impossible to fake--that throbs at the heart of good rock n' roll. And hell, any band can turn out a track called "Tiny Panties," but that actuall has some soul to it and deserves some praise. It's a no brainer: Think About It is a five piece of work.

"PONDER REVIEW"

After disbanding his former rock group Epstien's Mother, local music hero/mainstay Shawn Eiferman has re-emerged with a new pop-rock venture calling themselves PONDER. "Think About It," the band's self-released CD is chock full of radio ready adult contemporary alt-rock. These guys could easily be lumped in with Matchbox 20 or Lifehouse set, and be welcomed with open arms. One can certainly see why these guys have such a loyal following even though they have only been together for less than a year. Slick production and non threatening lyrics and songs a la Dave Matthews should secure these gents a spot on top 40 radio. Don't be surprised if you start hearing a lot more from Ponder in the near future. - Smash Magazine Oct. 2004
