"MTV World concert brings you the best music acts"

MTV WORLD Stage Live In Malaysia 2011 is set to rock the house tomorrow at i-City in Shah Alam.

The outdoor concert will be held for the third time in Malaysia in front of a live audience of about 15,000 fans.

The concert this time is all about rocking out, what with the stellar lineup of international, regional and local recording artistes comprising Thirty Seconds To Mars, Neon Trees, BEAST and Pop Shuvit all pumped up to put on a fantastic show.
The two-hour on air version of the concert will premiere on MTV SEA channel on Aug 8 at 10pm (Indonesia), 11pm (Singapore, Hong Kong and the Philippines) and midnight (Malaysia). An hour-long version of concert will also be broadcasted globally to 154 countries reaching more than 550 million households later in the year.

It will be quite interesting to see how the different acts from different continents will entertain the crowd.

Los Angeles-based American rock band 30 Seconds To Mars has played at many music festivals the world over, including Lollapalooza (United States), Summer Sonic (Japan) and Rock AmRing (Germany).

Founded in 1998 by brothers Shannon Leto and Jared Leto, the band also comprises guitarist Tomo Milicevic and touring members bassist Matt McJunkins and keyboardist Braxton Olita.

Like their name, Utah-based American alternative rock band Neon Trees are a combination of slick pop hoops and sturdy organic rock whose sound is themed with adolescent angst, longing, love lost and found, reminiscing the music of the ‘60s garage rock scene all the way to today’s dance rock anthems.

The six-piece boy band from South Korea, Beast, has established themselves as one of the top acts in the K-pop world since their debut in 2009. Originally known as B2ST (Boys to Search for Top), the group’s name was changed to Beast (Boys of East Standing Tall), a couple of days before they debuted. On Oct 14, 2009, they released their first mini-album BEAST Is The B2ST on the same day they also held a showcase performance on MTV.

With their unique blend of funky eclectic beats, hard hitting riffs and adrenaline-fuelled live shows, Pop Shuvit — Moots! (vocals), JD (guitar), AJ (bass), Rudy (drums) and Uno (turntables) — is undeniably Malaysia’s best hip-hop/rock band.

A truly multi-lingual and multi-cultural band, Pop Shuvit has five albums under their belt and has released tracks in numerous languages including English, Japanese, Malay, Tagalog, Thai and even Spanish.

Their consistent and steady creative output also won them various accolades across the industry, including 10 Malaysian No. 1 radio hits, an MTV Asia Award nomination, a special achievement award (AIM Kembara) in 2008 & Best Music Video Oh Sizuka! last year at the Anugerah Industri Muzik (AIM).

"All that Pop"

After winding up its Japan tour, Pop Shuvit is thinking Europe and eager to get its hip hop record out here.

Pop Shuvit, the local rap-rock band, toured Japan for the second time earlier this month and returned home with an experience most local bands can only dream about.

The band was promoting its latest release, Amped and Dangerous, for the Japanese market.

The CD is distributed through its Japanese record label S2S and Shuvit visited three major cities – Osaka, Tokyo and Nagoya.

Thumbs up: Pop Shuvit frontman Moots (left) and bassist AJ are looking for more live action abroad this year.
The band played clubs or “live houses” at each city, and hired a van to travel around in, and lug their equipment and crew (sound engineer, videographer and show manager).

“It was hectic,” said frontman Moots, recalling the Japanese gigs.

“We travelled for about eight hours each day and there was only time to set up (the equipment), perform, pack up and party before moving on to the next city in the morning. All in all, it was a good experience.”

Although this was a far cry from having your own tour bus (or your own personal jet, like the big and successful bands) and a big crew to do all the setting-up and dismantling of equipment and such, Moots welcomed the experience, saying that it was a “refresher course” for the band.

“I think this is what makes you a tougher band – being able to rough it out. It’s different from playing in KL, where most of the gigs are held around the city. I think we’ve been pampered here.

“In Japan, the cities are so far apart and there are so many venues to play. If you have a band in Japan and you want to go out and gig, you can tour 30 to 40 cities.”

Shuvit played in Club Drop in Osaka, Club Up Set in Nagoya and Club Asia in Tokyo. Club Up Set has a capacity of about 500 while the other two clubs have 1,000 each.

Shuvit co-headlined with Japanese band Uzumaki on this tour while five opening acts – Smorgas, Possibility, THC, Rotten Graphity and Acid Head Some Rise – provided support at the various venues.

The Amped and Dangerous tour also opened doors for Shuvit to perform at Nagoya, a new city for the quintet as the band’s single, Let Sleeping Dogs Lie, shot to No.1 at Nagoya’s Xfm radio station.

The station previously held a one-hour special feature on the band. So it is no surprise what Moots has to say about the crowd in Nagoya and the Japanese audience in general.

“Nagoya had the smallest venue but the craziest crowd. The Japanese are responsive and humble. The way the Japanese bands interact with the crowd is quite different. They talk a lot to the audience. And the crowds won’t do anything you tell them to. It’s only when they get into the music, do they get going.”

Shuvit has two sides to its career these days. The band started out as a rap-rock outfit but because of market penetration, it will be releasing a hip hop album (due in May) for the Malaysian market, while the music aimed at the Japanese audience is decidedly rock-based.

This explains why Amped and Dangerous (released in Japan last August) is not readily available here as the band only printed 1,000 copies, to be sold wherever they gig in Malaysia.

“We’ve found that Malaysians tend to like the mellower sound but there are fans who like its rock side.”

Moots, however, prefers not to separate music genres for the sake of demographics.

Shuvit’s yet-to-be-titled hip hop release taps the band’s strengths, with Moots laying down the rhymes and DJ Uno handling the beats. The rest of the group – bassist AJ, drummer Rudy and guitarist JD – provide the textures for the album, making this hip hop release a “live” sounding record rather than a programmed effort.

A variety of guests will appear on it, including Roshan (K Town Klan), Dabo (Japan), Vandal (Canada), Dandee (Thailand), Nitro & Fanta (Puerto Rico) and Ahli Fiqir (Singapore).

Be it hip hop or rap-rock, it takes nothing away from Shuvit’s reputation for producing work that holds up.

“Music is music, man. I believe that genres are irrelevant. People tell me that rap-rock is dead and yet, the newly reformed Rage Against the Machine, the band I believe started the whole rap-rock movement, is still selling out shows.

“The key to success for a band is longevity and for Pop Shuvit, we’ll keep on doing what we do.”

And that includes playing more gigs in and out of Malaysia. The band has been invited to play at The 4Elements Festival in Vienna this September and plans to tour Germany after that.

“It’s an extreme sports festival but we’ve got to consider the cost first because we pay our own way and it does cost a lot. But, yeah, we want to tour as much as we can,” Moots said.

Pop Shuvit made a video of the Amped and Dangerous tour of Japan and it will be aired on Hitz.tv in May. This coincides with the release of the band’s new hip hop album. - TheStar online Malaysia

"Multi-lingual acts coming to the fore"

Outside of Faizal Tahir’s triumphant showing at the AIM awards, the event also proved that younger Malaysian acts have tremendous crossover potential with multi-lingual offerings.

The writing was on the wall as soon as pop-rock newcomer Faizal Tahir opened the 15th Anugerah Industri Muzik (AIM) awards show with a stunning performance. By the end of the night, he went home the biggest winner by grabbing four awards including the prestigious album of the year award for his debut album, Aku.Muzik.Kamu. The singer who had courted controversy earlier this year by barring his chest on national TV outdid every other performer as he took to the stage and the air (he was hoisted up by wirework) and left audiences in no doubt what an exciting and powerful new talent we have now in our midst.
AIM 2008’s big winner, Faizal Tahir, who won four awards.

And the support for Faizal was more than obvious during the AIM show held last Saturday at Putra World Trade Centre in Kuala Lumpur as he received the loudest cheers despite there being pockets of loyal fans for Datuk Siti Nurhaliza and Dayang Nurfaizah.

In any category Faizal was nominated, the majority of the crowd kept the cheers loud, backing the father of two as their favourite. And they went home happy with the other awards he won – best vocal performance in an album (male), best new artiste and best rock album.

The only contender for Faizal that night was Siti, who won three awards – best pop album, best vocal performance in an album (female) and best musical arrangement in a song (Bahasa Malaysia).
Local Indian act Boomerangx and guests GoldKartz performing at the AIM 2008 show in Kuala Lumpur.

Last weekend’s AIM show was also different from previous years as it introduced categories such as best local Chinese album and best local Indian album.

The language barriers are being blurred in the Malaysian music scene with multi-lingual acts coming to the fore. Hence, local singer Karen Kong and the hip-hop crew of Boomerangx and GoldKartz provided a refreshing and much needed boost to the otherwise Malay-centric live performances at AIM award shows previously.
Local singer Karen Kong is just one multi-lingual act coming to the fore at the awards show.

It was also a good night for independent bands as Pop Shuvit received the Anugerah Kembara which honours bands and artistes who have taken their music beyond our shores. Pop Shuvit was the closing act for AIM and what a great show that was, as the stage was colourfully filled with fire-breathers and clowns-on-stilts.

Audiences also witnessed another independent rock band Estranged perform as well.

All in all, AIM 2008 may be the catalyst that will forever change how we as Malaysians see the local music industry. As its doors open to non-Malay acts and independent artistes, we can only expect a larger variety of music from all sorts of Malaysians from now on. - The Star Newspaper

We wanted to do away with the formality of awards shows and decided to pit two adventure teams, using two cameras that captured their chase scenes through the streets of Kuala Lumpur, unearthing clues via celebrities who announce the winners while a clock challenges them to accomplish their task within 60 minutes. I t was a mammoth task coordinating and pulling this off in such a short time frame
We had audiences from more than 30 countries logged on to the awards show from all over Asia, Europe, Australia and USA and this clearly showed the interest that has been generated by this amazing awards platform. We have already been approached by parties in Europe and other Asian countries to help organize more independent music awards show of this nature.
"It was such an open field, and in the end, there was really no clear cut winner of the night. It was amazing to witness indie acts like Motherjane from India take Best Rock act, yet, the Best rock vocalist went to Dia Hassan from UAE. And not surprisingly indie acts from Indonesia and the Philippines landed the highest number of AVIMAs, which we believe, boiled down to the fact that these are artistes who continue to evolve and innovate in the way that they approach and express their music." said Siva Chandran, founder of AVIMA 2009 and Managing Editor of Voize.my

In the true spirit of indie, the zany awards show was showcased like no other, combining the reality TV show style of the Amazing Race and the countdown clock ala "24". The awards show was beamed "live" via a studio from an undisclosed location and viewers from all over the world were able to watch the show via 2 live-stream sites courtesy of Pop Teevee and CGYnet from the Voize.my website.

Bio

Pop Shuvit began making waves in the local music scene in late 2001. Comprising of Moots (vocals), JD (guitars), AJ (bass), Rudy (drums) and UNO (turntables), the band has had 4 successful releases under their belt and rocked fans throughout Asia notably in Japan, Thailand and Singapore. Known for their adrenaline packed live shows and eclectic blend of hip hop and rock, Pop Shuvit are being touted as Asia’s leading Hip Hop Rock band.

Their debut album ‘Take it & Shuvit’ broke new ground when their first single ‘Skaters’ Anthem’ was released exclusively on the Internet and became one of the most downloaded local songs in Malaysian music history. The hype and street buzz from the track caught the ears of ESPN, who in turn licensed the track for use in their Summer X-Games broadcast that hit millions of households worldwide. As further credit to Pop Shuvit, ESPN played their music videos and tracks off the album throughout the duration of competition.

In 2003, Pop Shuvit released “Take it & Shuvit” in Japan and became the first Malaysian band to hit the music chart in Japan. The overwhelming support from Japanese youth market ensured that all tracks of the album charted the top 20 on the Tower Records sales charts (even beating raprock luminaries like Linkin Park) without any promotion to back the album. The success of their releases in Japan led to Pop Shuvit touring the land of the rising sun in 2005 to support their sophomore release, ‘HERE & NOW’, leading to one of the most successful and talked about headlining tours for any Malaysian rock band. The album was a hard-hitting social commentary of urban culture and spurred hits like “Old Skool Rocka” and “Journey”, with the latter earning the band the 1 Song of the year on the Malaysian English Top Ten for 2005 and “Best Rock Act” at the inaugural Hitz.fm Malaysian English Top Ten Awards 2005.

Always one to go against the grain, the band released a dance remix album and a hip hop EP in 2004 and 2006 respectively. The remix of their track ‘Conversations’ from the “Shuvit Remixes” dance CD was hand picked by uber DJ Nick Warren for inclusion in pioneering UK dance music label Global Underground’s mix CD, Shanghai GU28 that peaked at 19 on the UK TOP 40 Dance Album Charts. The hip hop EP, a 4 track 12 inch vinyl release, featured collaborations with some of hip hop’s most respected emcees from around the globe including US emcees Big Pooh from Little Brother, L.E.G.A.C.Y, Cesar Comache, ZION from ZION I, Def Jam Japan’s DABO and Reggaeton duo Nitro Y Fanta from Puerto Rico.

Not resting on their laurels, Pop Shuvit’s eagerly anticipated third album, aptly titled “Amped & Dangerous” hit stores in Japan on 23 August 2006 with a later release date being planned for the Malaysian market. The 12 song set is a rollercoaster ride of crunching guitars, pounding rhythms and funked out hip hop beats and rhymes."This is essentially a guitar driven album that’s made for the mosh pit. Simply put, it rocks harder!” says skinman Rudy about the new material.Malaysian fans can expect something different as Guitarist/Producer JD hinted, “We had to think strategically this time around and only release tracks that cater for a specific market so the Japanese/Asian and Malaysian editions will be different.” The Japanese edition of the album will be released throughout Asia as an import edition so fans will still be able to obtain both copies. To top off a great 2006, Pop Shuvit walked away with the “Best Live Act” at the Annual Malaysian English Top Ten Awards 2006.Being independent, the boys understand that there is a need to diversify and take the band to the next level as frontman Moots! Pointed out, “That’s the essence of Pop Shuvit, we always do things differently and love taking risks. We want to turn Pop Shuvit into a brand name and to do this we need to branch out and spread our wings be it in music or other facets of urban culture.”

True to their word, the boys have done just tha
