""a dark, weird ride... one truly unforgettable pop song." - FILTER Magazine"

You know you're in for a dark, weird ride when a music video opens with an anonymous hand lighting a black cigarette. Moments later, we see the man responsible, Henry Mowgli Gillespie, sporting a sweatshirt that reads "NO PRAYER OR DANDELION" while standing in a busy crosswalk.

Gillespie, the Austin-based musician best known as Popular Culture, released his freshman album, Episode, last summer via Sparrowsongs Music. To purchase Gillespie's debut, on vinyl or CD, head over to Sparrowsongs.

Track two, "Dandelion," has now been transformed into an epic video, full of Gillespie's deadpan expression, perfectly chilling baritone vocals, and quirky, upbeat electronic elements that make this one truly unforgettable pop song.

We bet no one has ever told you "no prayer or dandelion's gonna resurrect your peace of mind," but maybe this is the advice you need to hear. Thanks for the tough love, Henry. - FILTER

"VICE PREMIERE: POPULAR CULTURE'S "DANDELION" VIDEO"

Popular Culture is the electronic music baby of Henry Mowgli. Henry is originally from Austin, Texas, but lives in Brooklyn now. I met him in real life for the first time at an independent movie theater, but did not realize it was him, or who I had been talking to for five minutes, until I got home. Boy did I feel silly. This is the premiere of his video for "Dandelion" off of his album Episode. - VICE

Bio

Popular Culture is the innovative project of young artist, Henry Mowgli . The music is a unique combination of bleak and danceable. After two years of on and off sessions with producer Kyle Ellison (Butthole Surfers, Meat Puppets, Pariah) in a tucked away home studio in Austin, Texas, Popular Culture's debut album Episode was recorded. Each song is a pure embrace and reflection of what ails and intrigues the human spirit. The combination of high and low end equipment used in recording creates a soundscape to mirror the balance needed to stay afloat in a young man's mind. "I don't sleep much, I get restless". Both organic and synthesized sounds fill his songs with a sense of diversity and an aspect of mystery. Pulling from influences such as Bauhaus and The Jesus and Mary Chain to Talking Heads and New Order, Popular Culture creates a contemporary outlook on archaic ideas. Young eyes on an old world.
