If you aren’t familiar with her first solo release CD “I’m Ready Now” ( 2005 BLAPOP Records/Freedom Ministries), you’d better prepare yourself for one of the most unique voices you will ever hear. There really isn’t a voice that compares to the raspy, and often sultry sound of this artist. Don’t get it twisted though, she sings for the Lord!!!

There are multiple ways of describing Portia Young. Whenever you mention her name, you have virtually opened several topics for discussion; she is a gifted Singer, Song Writer, Psalmist and Teacher.
Portia was born and raised in Joliet Illinois, and the youngest of 4 sisters and 2 brothers; she is the daughter of the late Reverend Joseph C. Wright Jr. As a young adult, she experienced the God given gift of writing songs; most inspired with fully arranged melodies. It wasn’t until she gave her heart to Jesus that she discovered this gift of song writing.
After becoming a member at her local church, Living Word Christian Center, Pastor Bill Winston, she joined the praise and worship team. There she later became one of the praise and worship team leaders. In extension of her musical gifts, she made her contribution as a writer and lead vocalist on the song entitled, “All Glory Honor and Praise” and writer of the songs entitled, “Just Because I Believe”, and “Crossing Over to the Other Side. She has also participated in writing and recording songs used in biblical dramas.
Portia's CD release I’M READY NOW, harnesses the unique and artistic sound of this aggressive tyro, as it continues to move rapidly across the airwaves of radio and television.
Portia was featured on the new artist showcase of the Sunday Morning Spirit of Love and Inspiration Gospel Show which was aired on 107.5 WGCI FM Chicago radio station with hostess, Effie Rolfe. The show featured the songs “Lord of All” and “Now Faith” from her current CD release. Shortly after its release, the song “Release the Pressure (Like David Danced)” began weekly airplay on Chicago’s AM 1390’s weekend Gospel Hip Hop Show.
Portia has been featured on the Tecora Rodgers show, which airs on Monday nights weekly at 10:00 p.m. on Chicago Access Cable channel 19. I'm Ready Now, was incepted on Indy’s newest Christian radio station, WHTJ 1690-AM, in Indianapolis, Indiana. Portia proudly received a nomination for the 2005 Newsome Gospel Award for Best Female Vocalist.
Portia participated in the 3rd annual season taping of “THE GOSPEL OF MUSIC with JEFF MAJORS" gospel show for TV One, a national cable and satellite television broadcast. The taping is currently being aired in rotation on the Jeff Majors Show, program #310, weekdays and Saturdays
Portia successfully completed a 23-day Gospel Concert Tour of Italy with the Chicago Spirituals.
From the home base, the current and most major ministry in Portia’s life is the outreach prison ministry of her local church where she is dedicated to singing and teaching the Gospel, primarily in women’s prisons. Her heart's desire is to serve others from all walks of life by impacting them with the Gospel of Jesus Christ through her music and teaching ministry.
