The story of Portmanteaux begins in a studio apartment in the financial district of New York City, where singer-songwriter Allan Fox, a graduate of the Clive Davis Institute at NYU, began to imagine a musical act that somehow incorporated many different forms of popular music into a singular style. “I had grown tired of going to shows and hearing bands repeat the exact same style in each of their songs,” says Allan. “My main concern was how to weave these styles interchangeably without sounding like a variety act; and more importantly how I could do this without compromising the widespread appeal of the music.”
In the winter of 2008, Allan wrote “Lions and Liars” and “Writing on the Ocean Floor with Endless Ink” as test subjects. Between these two songs you can hear elements of Rock, Hip-Hop, Blues, R&B, Punk, and Electro. The positive influence of family and friends was all he needed to write a full catalogue of songs under the same guidelines and you can now hear elements that include Samba, Americana, Math Rock, Be-Bop, Reggae, Funk, Bit Pop, and Neo Soul mixed into the music
Allan toured throughout the UK as a solo act to rave reviews before deciding to come home and put a band together. He recruited a doctor, a Google employee, and an insurance salesman....thus Portmanteaux was born.
