Wood is a great composer, and the rhythm section, which definitely
leans toward modern funk/hip-hop grooves, is killin'.

Bio

Established in 2003 under the direction of Stephen Wood, POSTAL is a jazz-groove quintet committed to new music, expressive sound, and the expansion of traditional musical forms. The group – consisting of Wood (Fender Rhodes), Eddie Bayard (saxophone), Brett Burleson (guitar), Shane Willis (drums), and Scott Gold (bass guitar) – plays regularly in their hometown of Columbus, Ohio. Wood’s reserved and nuanced approach to the Fender Rhodes is complimented by Burleson’s soulful, avant-rock performance on the Fender Telecaster. Bayard, a modern master of all styles and languages, impresses his bold genius upon the grooves. Willis and Gold play together cohesively, exploring rhythmic modulation in constant musical dialogue.

Their cd “Theory of Chaconne” was released in 2003 to critical acclaim, and is now available in Ohio music stores, as well as through cdbaby.com and iTunes. Their new album, currently in production, will hit the scene in 2007. Stephen Wood has collected his largest and most sophisticated ensemble to date, and the new recordings reveal the group’s evolution and maturity.

Postal was named “Sharpest Cutting Edge” in The Other Paper’s Jazz Review, and continues to receive critical acclaim for their evolving sound, orchestration and improvisation genius. In addition to performing regularly in Columbus, Postal has performed at venues and festivals across the state of Ohio, as well as New York, Chicago, and Nashville. Recent highlights include the Tabfest Music Festival, Hyatt Jazz Series in Cincinnati, and the Dublin Arts Festival.

On March 24, 2005 Wood was a featured guest artist at Fisk University Department of Music, where he performed two of his compositions with the jazz ensemble as well as one new work for the ensemble commissioned by Prof. Gary Nash and the Dept. of Music. In June of 2004 Wood took part in master classes with Krystof Penderecki and George Crumb at the Bach Contemporary Music Festival in Eugene, Oregon. More information on Stephen Wood and POSTAL can be found at www.stephenwood.biz and www.myspace.com/postalgrooves.

Postal performs as an intimate quintet or a raucous big band, with the number of members ranging from 5 to 10. The ensemble is available for bookings, with fees and availability varying according to the group’s size. I hope you will be in touch to discuss opportunities for performance.
