"Dance Party in a Box"

Armed with two times the Derek Power courtesy of Derek Wood and Derek McCall, Oakland's Post Coitus are as close as we may ever get to a dance party in a box. At the urging of label honcho Disco Shawn, Post Coitus grew from a house party sensation into a full fledged band, creating their own beats, music and elaborate light shows and unleashing it all at boogiefriendly clubs and venues all over the Bay Area. Their debut full length was released on Double Negative Records in 2005. -Shroomer McGinty - Noise Pop 2006 Festival Guide

"Nominee: Best Electro/Electronic/Experimental Artist"

It's not often that a band is so moving and interesting that someone feels the urge to start a record label he always wanted to start, sign the band, and put out its debut album. Such is the case with Postcoitus' Derek Wood and Derek McCall and their recently released full-length, Build Your Own Circus, which has the tender heart of the best '80s synth-pop and the resolute edge and jaded cool of right-this-minute. The Oakland band distinguished itself early on in live performances with showy accessories like costumes and strobe lights, tricks that creatively twisted the "two dudes with gear" stereotype that plagues live electronic music. In the Postcoitus show, those lights are as vital an element as the drum machines, synthesizers, and guitars that are the band's backbone. The simple ingenuity, not to mention the songs themselves, inspired Shawn Reynaldo to start Double Negative Records. Better known as Disco Shawn, Reynaldo DJs for KALX and Live 105 and is a co-promoter of the 9-year-old weekly indie/electronic party "popscene," so it's safe to say you can trust his ears when it comes to discovering new talent. In the case of Postcoitus, inspiration begat inspiration, and Reynaldo's enthusiasm accelerated the creation of Build Your Own Circus and helped inform the overall Postcoitus mission: being freaking hot, at a live show near you. - SF Weekly, October 19, 2005

"Postcoitus fuck you sonically and they don't even know your name."

The beats thump you. The lyrics are moist and wet on your body as the songs stick in your head. Postcoitus fuck you sonically and they don't even know your name. Self-described as a "dance music project" that orginiated with Derek Wood jigging and hopping by himself, Postcoitus make synth pop with a dash of '80s dance and trippy effects. Joined by Derek McCall, the duo crank out its ass-shaking beats with keys, drum machines, guitars and lights. The double D's ask their audience for one thing: "Our only request is that we can have the lights off."

Bio

Postcoitus began in 2004 with a simple formula: dance beats + strobe lights = fun. Initially a one man project headed by Oakland’s Derek Wood, the first shows consisted of him singing and dancing at his friends’ house parties over some lo-fi synthy beats blaring out of a small CD player. That and a healthy dose of handheld strobe lights. Nonetheless, this seemingly ridiculous project caught the eye of KALX and Live 105 DJ Disco Shawn, who offered to put out the music on his own label.

As time passed and Disco Shawn became more impatient, Postcoitus began to develop into something resembling a real band. Derek first lined up some help from his friend Aaron Olson. Aaron played a few shows and penned the track “Exquisite Loving” before he had to bail out. Derek then enlisted the help of another Derek – his housemate Derek McCall. Now armed with twice the Derek power, Postcoitus continued writing songs, playing shows and building ridiculous amounts of lights for their stage show.

Postcoitus has played shows with the Lovemakers, Gravy Train!!!, Les Georges Leningrad, Andy Bell (of Erasure), Tracy and the Plastics, Books on Tape, Busdriver, Chow Nasty, and labelmates the Death of a Party. They were invited to take part in the 2005 and 2006 Noisepop festivals. In 2005 they were nominated for an SF Weekly Music Award in the Electro/Electronic/Experimental category.

In July 2005, Postcoitus released their debut album Build Your Own Circus on Double Negative Records. It was serviced nationally to college radio by AAM and charted at numerous stations. Postcoitus is currently writing and recording material for their next release.
