"PowerPlay FYI - A Normal Life"

Ever wondered what a cover band sounds like when it doesn’t do covers? Well the answer is at hand in the shape of ‘A Normal Life’, the current album from Powerplay FYI, a Chicago based collective that is the brainchild of keyboard player and vocalist Ruben Agosto. Embracing the best tradition of outfits such as Tower of Power and East Bay Soul, Powerplay FYI started out with the intent of bringing horn bands back to the Chicago party scene but now, with nine all original compositions, is providing fresh new meaning to the intoxicating amalgam of jazz, funk, Latin and soul that is at its core.

Not only that, the CD reverberates with the influences that have shaped the musical direction of Powerplay FYI. For example ‘The Eyes Have It’ is a lively cut where the combination of horns and vocals are evocative of Blood Sweat and Tears while elsewhere the hugely percussive ‘Voodoo’ opens up with a world beat and evolves into a smoky number that is somewhat reminiscent of Incognito at its best.

‘A Normal Life’ is, in the main, an album where the band keeps its collective foot firmly on the gas yet when the tempo eases down for the romantically inclined ‘Amparo’ the delightful vocals of Pamela Fernandez really get the job done.

Another Smooth Jazz Therapy favorite is the horn enriched, easy grooving ‘Truth’ where Fernandez (this time in the good company of Peter Frank) is again on top form. Frank’s earthy vocals are front back and center of the wonderfully brass driven title cut that gets on a roll early and stays there whilst dazzling bursts of Hammond B3 coupled with sensational horn riffs pave the way to the high octane ‘Crazy Music’.

Later, when the band assumes a distinctly Latin disposition, the result is the totally sublime ‘Passage’ that is particularly notable for superb input on guitar from Dave Morales. The soulful mid tempo tones of Fernandez makes the luscious ‘The Power Of Love’ something very special and in fact this is one of two tracks to incorporate arrangements from Tower of Power arranger David Eskridge. Another is ‘Mystery’ where Peter Frank is in charge on vocals and this strong connection to Tower of Power is testimony to the way this legendary band has ensured that horn bands continue to enjoy a loyal and passionate following.

Fortunately, with juicy funk, soul and jazz that is served up on a hot brass skillet, Powerplay FYI are following in its illustrious footsteps. - Smooth Jazz Therapy (UK)

"CD Review: PowerPlay FYI - A Normal Life"

PowerPlay FYI has 10 members and that’s not including the various guest musicians helping out on the Chicago-based band’s debut CD. The tracks on A Normal Life, written for the most part by keyboards player-vocalist Ruben Agosto, explore various forms of urban contemporary and Latin music. It’s a strong effort from a group that makes its bread and butter playing cover songs at weddings and venues like Green Dolphin Street and Navy Pier.

The melodic title track evokes Robert Cray while depicting the chaotic lifestyle of musicians who also hold down day jobs, and concludes, “The cost can bring you tears/Yet I’d do it all again.” Singer Pamela Fernandez shines on “The Power Of Love,” a smooth ballad that sounds like an old standard updated with soulful horns and a sophisticated vocal arrangement. It’s got great potential as a hit single.

“Amparo,” a song about unrequited love, was obviously influenced by the Latin rhythms and sizzling guitar of Santana, while guitarist David Morales’s “Crazy Music” is an energetic call to party. A breezy reprise of “A Normal Life,” with the emphasis on harmony vocals and piano, deftly underscores Agosto’s line about, “the sound is tight.” - Broken Hearted Toy
