Any mention of country rock these days and it’s bands like Wilco who get the nod. Prey For Green are an altogether different proposition. Their retro sounds plot a direct route back to the genre’s ‘70s heyday, when it was acceptable to add a dash of Southern soul to the mix. They lack the delicious rich harmonies that the great bands brought to the genre, but they’re not frightened of rocking out like a gentler, more caring Black Crowes when the occasion rises, “Stories Never Told” being the prime example. Rich Alfonso (lead vocals, guitar) has searched for this sound for a long time, from SOKO (Atlantic) in south Florida, to the 1st incarnation of Prey for Green many years ago in Virginia. It wasn’t until he met Michael Lashinsky (lead guitar, vocals), Dale “The Hitman” Rock (drums, percussion) and Michael “Eddie” Del Campo (bass, vocals) that it all came together. Michael Lashinsky grew out of Miami, FL original scene, moved to NYC, landed a gig with Sinister Dane (Sony) in St. Louis, MO, and then moved to Atlanta, GA to get some southern soul. Dale “The Hitman” Rock brings a huge sound (There’s a reason for the “Hitman” in his name!) and experience to the group. Having played in Molly Hatchet and with many other established acts, he most definitely lays down the foundation. Michael “Eddie” Del Campo who has fine-tuned his musical style playing in the Orlando, FL scene for many years most definitely provides the low end.
One thing is certain: Prey for Green is a band that defies the individual experience of each member. Four expressive voices meld into one undeniable sound. Big beats, melodic bass, rich chiming guitars take flight with soulful vocals and lyrics that speak of life’s heartache, joy and longing for a higher place. We like to simply describe it as music for hearts and minds.
