Primitive Sound System

After two brilliant albums early in the decade released through the Tenerife based label Latidos Music (A Post Grunge Experience in 2001 and A Nu-Experience in 2004) which developed an outstanding collage of sounds based on jazzy rhythms and melodies floating around the most charming and hedonist side of clubbing, the project leaded by Iván Hall and also known as Primitive Sound System was no doubt a true referent for the contemporary music made in the Canary Islands. If an album like Daftpunk’s Discovery was the logical end of the French Touch in the international field of electronic and dance music, PSS founded with their cocktail of nu jazz and lounge atmospheres the brand name for the Canarian Touch to draw the sound always full of savoir faire in every song. Highly acclaimed by specialised media, these were intense years of promotional activity with gigs all over Spain and even reaching Germany or Italy, with the usual line up of great musicians giving the final touch to shape the style of the band. This can be seen and heard in the path in between the first and second albums, in which programming gives way to live performed music. Right after the second release , Iván takes the decision to halt his creative career but he keeps the hard work as a producer, promoter and sound engineer which has made of him one of the most influential persons, contributing to the musical explosion that the Canaries have witnessed these last years. Now this activity has been augmented with the imminent opening of his new recording studio and the non stop activity of his own label Mckenzie, which has seen releases of some of the most interesting Canarian acts of different genres.
Apart from this, in his private life, Iván has become a proud father, something that has helped to close the circle of maturity and calmness of a hyperactive character. Just Jazz must be understood as a sample of the way life goes in Iván’s case these days. More than a record made for the impulse of creativity, this a stopover to enjoy a very special moment. Thus, the producer’s role lies for the first time not in him but in the expert hands of Manolo Rodríguez, with Iván being joined by an outstanding selection of some of the best Canarian musicians and with the breathtaking voice of Clara Luna which recreates former PSS tunes with a very special moment when covering Unfinished Sympathy by massive Attack ( a referent band for Iván in his way of understanding music making), and all this with pure jazz as the keyword and the usual elegance of this project. There are records that are to be enjoyed and others that are made with joy. Just Jazz plays both roles.

Con dos álbumes a comienzos de década para el sello tinerfeño Latidos Music (A post grunge experience en 2001 y A nu-experience en 2004) en el que se desarrolló un espectacular collage sonoro a base de ritmos y melodías jazzies alrededor del concepto clubbing más hedonista y elegante, el proyecto liderado por Iván Hall conocido como Primitive Sound System dejaba bien alto el pabellón de la música contemporánea hecha en las Islas Canarias, hasta el punto de que si discos como Discovery de Daft Punk, sentaban las bases del French Touch en la escena electrónica internacional, PSS inauguraban en su coctelera de nu jazz de atmósferas lounge la denominación de origen de Canarian Touch para poder dibujar la línea sonora siempre plena de elegancia y saber hacer en cada una de las canciones. Aclamados por la crítica especializada, fueron estos intensos años de actividad promocional con conciertos por España e incluso países como Alemania o Italia, en el que la habitual y exquisita nómina de colaboradores y músicos de alto calado contribuían a perfilar el desarrollo estilístico del proyecto. Ya se deja ver esto en la transición del primer al segundo álbum, en el que la música interpretada gana terreno a la producción tecnológica e informática. Justo además después de este segundo lanzamiento, Iván decide imponerse un parón creativo, que no en lo vinculado a lo musical en el que su labor como productor, promotor y especialista en sonido lo convierte en uno de los personajes fundamentales en la explosión musical que han vivido las islas en los últimos años, que se ve multiplicada con la inminente puesta a punto de su nuevo estudio de grabación y la frenética actividad de su sello Mckenzie, motor de algunas de las propuestas musicales en diversos estilos que se han venido desarrollando en las islas. Además, en el plano personal, su reciente paternidad ayuda a cerrar el círculo de madurez y sosiego de un personaje hiperactivo por naturaleza. Y Just Jazz debe entenderse como una muestra de ese estado de las cosas que rodea la vida de Iván Hall en estos tiempos. Más que un disco por imperativo creativo, se convierte en una especie de parada en el camino para disfrutar de un momento especial.
