"IN THE PALMS OF HIS HANDS"

IN THE PALMS OF HIS HANDS You may not recognise the face but Paul Butler is a rock star twice over. As a member of Neuro and ID he’s seen it all – tours with Phil Lynott, wild nights out with INXS, to say nothing of hit records and torrid spells in the wilderness. After packing several life-times into a few decades, he’s now at the helm of a new band Propeller Palms. In his first major interview in nearly 20 years the Waterford veteran talks about his roller-coaster career, and its attendant triumphs and heartaches. Bio

Propeller Palms, are a new 10-piece outfit from Waterford featuring three brass players and three females singers crafted onto the basic rock format, with lead vocals handled by dynamic singer-guitarist Paul Butler, once of Neuro fame. Their debut album All In This Together sees them blend elements of hard-edged rock, blues, funk, white soul and black soul to impressive effect. There’s such a density to the sound that you hear fresh nuances on repeated listens. The album opens with the title track which will evoke thoughts of Springsteen as well as The Who’s ‘Won’t Get Fooled Again’. ‘Get It Right’ has a frenetic drive that never eases off the pace, as Butler pushes the band to scale the heights. The brass intro on ‘No Smokin’ No Jokin’’ leads into a funky workout with a wailing girly chorus to boot. They shift down the gears for ‘Rainbow’ with its sturdy Stones guitars and classy harmonies, before ‘We Will Meet Again’ settles into a tasty bluesy ballad with lusty brass and soaring back-up vocals. This debut album is charged with an exultant energy that makes it crackle with a heartwarming consistency from start to finish, and is one of the most rewarding Irish debuts I’ve heard for quite some time.
