"Prophecy To Release Lucky Dube Tribute, Dube's Son In Documentary"

Jamaican artist, Prophecy, created a beautiful tribute to Lucky Dube, the beloved reggae artist who was gunned down in South Africa in October. The tribute song "Chance - A Tribute To Lucky Dube" and accompanying music video will be available for a limited time from the combined efforts of Jah Birth (the Kingston label that Prophecy is on) and the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC). The single and music video were written and recorded/filmed in Jamaica. It's already receiving airplay on 18 SABC stations and getting a super positive response (naturally). The SABC is also producing a documentary that follows Lucky Dube's oldest son, Thokozani, as he "retraces his father’s steps through reggae music". Thokozani travels to Jamaica to find the roots of his father's music and meets up with Prophecy who travels back to South Africa to pay tribute to the reggae hero and humanitarian.Sources for this article:Reggae FilmsBlogMusicChartPon Di Wire in XLR8RLucky Dube - "Rastas Never Die" They played this song at his funeral; it is Dube describing his own death during life... - Jah Birth New Limited & South African Broadcasting Corporation

"Red Stripe/Irie FM Big Break"

Need a fast track to the big times? The real ‘Big Break’ beckons all emerging talents waiting for that moment to arrive. And that moment is less than one week away, as entries for the Red Stripe/Irie FM Big Break competition open on April 17, 2006.
Red Stripe/Irie FM Big Break has a fascinating history. In 2004, King Prof came to national attention when he copped the Red Stripe Superstar title. This was the predecessor competition that has now morphed into Red Stripe/Irie FM Big Break. Prior to this, however, IRIE FM hosted a talent competition for emerging artistes. Several artistes earned their stripes and stepped out into the spotlight courtesy of this competition. Among the Big Breakers were Abijah, Perfect, Nadz, Live Wyaa and others. Last year, Red Stripe and Irie FM joined forces and staged the first ever Red Stripe/Irie FM Big Break.
“In 2005 Prophecy came, saw and conquered the Red Stripe Reggae Sumfest stage,” Carlo Redwood, Group Marketing Manager, Red Stripe said. “This year one more emerging talent will get a chance to carve his/her name in the annals of reggae music history by grasping the Big Break moment live on stage, Jamaica’s greatest and the world’s best reggae music festival,” he added proudly.
This competition maintains its uniqueness as, its target includes, not amateurs, but budding performers who are just one step away from stardom, and only need that big break to emerge from the shadows,” Brian Schmidt, IRIE FM’s Marketing Manager, the man who brought this idea to life, said.
This is the only competition of its kind and one that offers a performance on reggae music’s biggest stage, to boot,” Brian Schmidt added. “The winner will also star in his/her own reality TV show, will get guaranteed airplay on Irie FM, a professionally produced music video among other perks,” Schmidt added.
In preparation for the Big Break, all entrants will participate in a voice and performance workshop, conducted by music industry luminaries, Suzanne Couch and Ibo Cooper.
Vocalist, Suzanne Couch is one of the island’s most respected, classically trained vocalists and pianist. International musician, teacher and former member of unparalleled Third World band, Ibo Cooper is by far one of Jamaica’s most adept musicians.
Red Stripe/Irie FM Big Break fans will get an opportunity to vote for their favourite competitor via text messaging. The final decision, however, lies with the panel of judges and includes: Desi Young, President of the Jamaica Federation of Musicians and former member of the 809 band; Richard "Shams" Browne - Musician, promoter and manager, born into the famous musical Browne family and DJ Sunshine, Irie FM selector who is easily recognized as one of Jamaica’s leading disc jockeys and host of the popular IRIE FM afternoon programme –the Jam. - Red Stripe/Irie FM Big Break

"Jah Birth New Ltd. Secures a Deal with South African Broadcasting Corporation - History is in the making!"

Jah Birth New Ltd., based in Kingston Jamaica has secured an exclusive deal with the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), one of the nation’s largest and most powerful broadcasters. The SABC has entered an agreement with Jah Birth to acquire the full and exclusive rights to Prophecy’s single “CHANCE – A TRIBUTE TO LUCKY DUBE” for a limited period in South Africa and the rest of the world; the agreement also extends to the single’s video. The song was written and recorded in Jamaica on the Jah Birth label and was dedicated to Lucky Dube after he was murdered in Johannesburg on October 18th.

Rohan Brown, a.k.a. Prophecy, is an up and coming Jamaican reggae artist who has been with Jah Birth since 2000.

“This project is a spiritual one and one which we had to do” says Delroy “Worm” Nevin, Chief Executive Officer of Jah Birth New Limited. Nevin continues to explain “that something needed to be done to honour a revolutionary, a humanitarian and a fellow reggae ambassador.” Thereafter, CHANCE – A TRIBUTE TO LUCKY DUBE was born. While the song acknowledges the loss and the pain felt over Dube’s death, it also asks pertinent questions about violence and its consequences.

In addition, the SABC is producing and filming a video for the song along with a documentary on Lucky Dube. The filming began last week in Jamaica and has since moved to Johannesburg, South Africa. Both the video and documentary will include footage taken in Soweto, and Durban. The documentary, which features Prophecy, follows Lucky Dube’s eldest son, Thokozani, as he embarks on a journey tracing his father’s path back to the roots of Reggae music. Thokozani comments: “The fact that the Jamaicans called us upon doing a tribute song to Lucky Dube is an indication that the SABC is a true custodian of South Africa’s cultural heritage and artistic expressions.”

While in Johannesburg, the single, CHANCE - A TRIBUTE TO LUCKY DUBE debuted on 18 of the SABC’s radio stations simultaneously at 19:55 EST. Since then Prophecy has been busy filming and interviewing with major radio and television stations across the nation. He has also maintained his connection at home in Kingston, speaking with Irie FM’s Ron Mushette live from SABC offices moments after the single had been launched. On Sunday he also connected with Running African’s Andrea Williams.

It has been a week of non-stop excitement for Jah Birth New Ltd., Prophecy and South Africans. Radio stations have been inundated with calls from listeners thanking and praising the Jamaican native who honours their hero. In return Prophecy was also honoured at a packed Club Carfax when he performed CHANCE - A TRIBUTE TO LUCKY DUBE with Lucky Dube’s band. The highly receptive crowd also had an opportunity to hear more of Prophecy’s work when he performed two additional, original songs: DEM WRONG and DON’T COME TELL ME. His performance was greeted with calls for an encore.

Now that it is official, Prophecy and Jah Birth are very proud to share this exciting news with the rest of the world. For more information, photos, or to book interviews contact Teresa Castellucci via sweettee@sympatico.ca and be a part of Jah Birth’s legend in the making as we pay tribute to the one we lost, Lucky Dube. Bio

Born Rohan Brown, he is called Prophecy and his insight outweighs his years by far. His wisdom suggests an old soul encapsulated in a young man’s body. He is a force to be reckoned with in a time where young men his age lavish in “bling”; Prophecy sings to awaken and to provoke change.
In a world that is steeped in negativity and an industry that saturates itself in mediocrity, conformity and lack of substance, Prophecy evokes emotion by the sheer sound of his voice. His talent is undeniable and his confidence demands attention.
“I want to make music that can elevate the mind of the common man and make things a little better through greater understanding of each other and our roles in this life. "
Since his inauguration into the music fraternity in 1996 when he entered the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission’s National Song Contest, Prophecy has worked diligently to hone his craft as a singer, songwriter.
He has devoted himself to being a voice for the voiceless with social anthems like Chance, Dem Wrong, Don’t Come Tell Me, Clearly, and Sacrifice. Within a decade, he would emerge victorious in another contest resulting in an opportunity to perform on Reggae Sumfest where the Jamaica Observer reported, “Prophecy wowed the unsuspecting Red Stripe Reggae Sumfest crowd.”
The first of its kind, the Red Stripe Big Break Competition created and managed by IRIE FM, was designed for “people who live the music and who know what it takes to be competitive in an international market”, said Carlo Redwood (Marketing Manager). The contestants performed the song they submitted to the competition across Jamaica in each of the country’s 14 parishes. Prophecy’s laid-back performing style along with his mellow and hauntingly melodic voice, catapulted him to triumph over 800 entrants with his single Don’t Come Tell Me.
Co-written with Marlon “Sojourner” DeCordova and produced by Delroy “Worm” Nevin, Don’t Come Tell Me’s reflections of a world with “too little love” and “too many wars” steadily gained support from Jamaicans across the nation as they logged in after every performance to cast their votes. Splash Magazine said, “Without a doubt, Prophecy is one of the most dynamic new entertainers to grace Jamaican stages in recent times”. After his victory, a video was filmed as the single began charting on radio and in local papers solidifying his arrival on the scene.
Prophecy’s beginnings however, are far greater than most aspiring artists can hope for. Upon his arrival to Kingston from his rural birth place of St. Thomas, some of his earliest recordings were for the late Sir Coxone Dodd and his Studio One label. Undoubtedly monumental, we fast forward to the present in order to see the future.

Prophecy is signed to the Jah Birth Music label where he continues to work closely with the label’s founder and president, Delroy “Worm” Nevin. As Prophecy’s manager, Nevin has helped to shape and nurture this raw talent since their peculiar introduction in 2001 when Prophecy auditioned for him for hours while Nevin watched a football match.
The rest is history, with Prophecy having already performed in Africa, Canada, and the Caribbean. From Montreal to Soweto, Prophecy has performed on stages most aspiring artists only dream of. He’s performed with Culture and the late Joseph Hill, Morgan Heritage, Chaka Demus and Pliers, Luciano, and Fantan Mojah to name a few. He has also performed at the US Embassy in Jamaica.
According to Jamaica’s X-News, “Whenever he sings, Prophecy has the singular ability to evoke major emotions and to magically open up a direct channel of memory to an era of good feeling that represents a Jamaica most people long to gain.”
Prophecy says, “Music was a tool of worship in my home, and I want to use my God-given talent to teach, heal and make a difference in the lives of people all over the world.”
His currently untitled debut album is due sometime in 2008 on the Jah Birth Music label in conjunction with Canada’s Explorer Recording Company.
If one were to make a prediction, or rather a prophecy, it would be that the man who goes by the name, Prophecy is destined for stardom.
