"Reportage"

Bio

Long Beach, CA—Prophet is a self-proclaimed West Coast lyricist and voice of hip hop in Long
Beach. A son to Mexican immigrant parents but a native son of Long Beach, Prophet recalls growing
up listening to the eclectic sounds of Banda, Oldies, Pop, Hip-Hop and R&B music. He grew up in a
poor neighborhood on Long Beach’s East side nestled in the heart of gang activity. It was in this
urban crucible where he honed his rap freestyling skills and derived his stage name, Prophet in the
streets of Long Beach. Prophet retained the moniker once he and his family moved away from his
old stomping grounds and away from a roguish past.
Nowadays, you’re more likely to find Prophet in the recording booth. Having had no formal
musical training, Prophet learned the art form by ear. He learned to develop concepts, structure his
lines, and craft songs by emulating “real lyricists.” Lyricists like Big Pun, Sick Jacken, RA the
Rugged Man, and fellow Long Beach rap artist Crooked I are among artists Prophet lists as
influences. He’s collaborated with other local artists such as O-TREES, LOS (BOTTOMGROUND),
and alongside producers EKNOCK (LIT-A-BIT STUDIOS/VITAL PRODUCTIONS) and
SOLDIER. Prophet rapped for a 5 year span beginning in 2001 to 2005, highlighted by an offer to
sign with Death Row Records in 2003 as a Rap Group with his cousin Propane rapping under the
group name CHRONIK ILLNESS before deciding to go independent. That arrangement fell apart
and Prophet has since grown hungrier and wiser.
Prophet returns with new projects among his first mixtape "If There's A Will, There's A Way" and
a larger career development plan. He appears on guest features "For The West Coast" by Killahboy
Onwon, and on the Vital Productions hit single "West Coast Boogie" over a laid back melodic west
coast groove provided by Vital Productions/Lit-A-Bit Studios own EKNOCK, and verses provided
by Vital Productions artist and Compton, CA native SALE DAWG, O TREES,KILLAHBOY
ONWON, and hook by Lit-A-Bit Studios/Vital Productions singer DARILIS. Prophet maintains that
he raps for the love and appreciation of “true music lovers, the real hip hop heads,” and loves the fact
that he can share his music and get a reaction from such fans. He understands the fact he’s a Mexican
rapper trying to step into a predominantly Black man’s competitive sport. The competition
“empowers me to try harder to distinguish myself from all so called rappers and let them realize that
it’s Prophet! He aims to “bring back the real raw lyrics that hip hop has been missing and to bring
the West Coast back” and asserts he “will eat up any emcee who wants to oppose. We Hip Hop we in
the building!”
