"Prophets and Outlaws - EP review"

Prophets and Outlaws
~A pocket full of sunshine, and a belly full of soul ~

Somewhere in between Van Morrison, Darius Rucker, and Marshall Tucker is where you will find the sweet, soulful sounds, and crisp clear lead guitar of Prophets and Outlaws. Although relatively new to Texas music as a fledgling band, the band members are definitely not. Their new self-titled EP is a small collection of the exceptional song skills and vocal range of Matt Boggs on lead vocals and guitar, the amazing Steve “Stevie G” on blazing lead guitar and vocals, his brother James Gukenheimer on drums and vocals, Matt Murrow on Bass guitar, and Jamie “Jelly” Ringhlom on keyboards and vocals.
You may recognize Matt Boggs from his fairly recent appearances on CMT’s “Can You Duet” or along with the brothers Gukenheimer from their previously super successful joint venture “The Matt Boggs Band”. Veteran bassist Matt Murrow brings a dose of Louisianan Jazz/Funk into the mix along with a whole lot of southern soul. Add a generous helping of “Funk Dirty” Love from local keyboard artist Jamie “Jelly” Ringholm and you have a sweet recipe sure to please even the most finicky of musical appetites. One of the most appealing attributes of PAO is “What you hear is what you get”. One of my pet peeves of the recording industry today is how much “Sweetening” goes into manipulating a track to force fit the performance, or the performer into a song recording. You will find none of that here. When you go to a Prophets and Outlaws performance, you will hear exactly what you hear on the EP. Maybe not exactly word for word sometimes, but always musically accurate, and spot on key. Recorded in Austin at Premium Recording Studios who have worked with the likes of Cory Morrow, Max Stallings, and both Bruce and Charlie Robinson, and engineered, mixed and mastered by Michael Landon and Eric Delegard the EP in itself could pass for a full length CD.
For all the Two-Steppers out there, the song “Leave the Light On” has the three staged beat to get any couple up on the floor, as does “Sweet Southern Smile”. Both of these are radio single ready and sure to make these guys a guaranteed hit in no time flat. “Honey Child” is a carry-over form the Matt Boggs Band and is a shoe in to get all the gals dancing and shaking to the rock and roll beat. When mama’s happy, everyone’s happy; Right? Nuff said. All the lovers can get their slow dance on with the slow moving and sultry beats of “Finally Alone”. It will take you back to those intimate moments with your sweetheart, and rekindle the flames of Love once again. Anything can happen when the conditions are just right, and the distractions of the day have subsided.
The song I enjoyed undoubtedly the most is a little tune called “Soul Shop”. If you like songs with a whole lot of Soul and an R&B style this one will become one of your favorites as it has mine. Simple, easy to relate to lyrics and a fun melodic tune come together in a fond memory reminiscent of songs by The Ink Spots, and many of the Motown artists of the 50’s, and 60’s. It’s just a small reminder that rainy days don’t have to be gloomy, and can turn out to be the “truly special” times of our lives. It all depends on what color the glasses are you choose to look through. You will catch yourself singing along and harmonizing with Matt if you are not careful. The Prophets and Outlaws EP is a cruel and unusual tease, and I mean that in the most positive and kind manner possible. I can only say that five songs from these well rounded, and talented musicians is just not enough for the world. In my humble opinion we all need more positive, fun, upbeat, feel good songs mixed into the music we listen to today. Prophets and Outlaws are destined to become a huge sensation. I’m honored to have been asked write down my thoughts on their music. What I have to say is Right On! Go see this band! I can’t wait for a full length CD, and finally - Ka-PAO!

"99.5 The Wolf Radio Review"

Prophets and Outlaws are a blues/rock band verging on the cusp of contemporary with their sing-a-long choruses and catchy lyrics. The perfect jam band for a crowded bar, an outdoor summer venue or a long car drive. Their bluesy guitar riffs combined with their homegrown lyrical approach create a unique combination. Imagine combining the instrumental stylings of John Mayer with the carefree lyrics of Jerrod Neiman and what you come out with is the blues southern rock mixture of PAO. It is also worthy to note that in addition to his unique vocal style, front man Matt Boggs keeps the ladies swooning with his charming smile and electric stage presence. But looks can be deceiving, while their members may look young, their music holds a lot of character and soul. Their single “Soul Shop” is a perfect example of their ability to infuse soul into a contemporary chorus, which, like any great radio hit, will resonate in your head all day long. Their live show has the right amount of jam and energy to please beer drinking hipsters, soccer moms and even grandparents. A band great for all ages and occasions. - Kristin Cook - Weekend On-Air Personality

"House of Blues Dallas - Live show review"

"Prophets and Outlaws are one of the most exciting up and coming bands in Dallas. Their live performance has everything you could want: soulful solos, perfect harmonies, and energy that takes command of any room. With a set list that takes you from Old Crow Medicine Show to Tracy Chapman to the fan favorite original "Soul Shop", this is a show you can't afford to miss." - Chris Spinks - Marketing Director

"Prophets and Outlaws EP Review"

As a music lover I find myself categorizing music into three levels. One – I hear a song that I immediately like. Problem with this is that after about twenty listens the song loses its hold on my interest and I either never listen to it again or only on rare occasions.
Two – I hear a song and there is no instant liking or disliking, it is just a song. This category I go through my five listens theory. If five listens go by and I still do not like the song the song it is transferred to category three. Yet if the songs grab me more and more with each listen until I love the song then it will be apart of my play list forever.
Three – If test two fails then the song is not listened to again.

Prophets and Outlaws a Dallas based blues band has without a doubt been classified in category two. I originally went for the five song listen and they passed. In fact after the five song listen I kept the stream going for the rest of the night while I did other things around the office and found myself singing along with the lyrics.

Soul Shop is a classic sounding rhythm and blues/soul song.

Honey Child is a straight rocking blues song that keeps you wanting to dance and move.

Finally Alone a great slow song that makes you want to grab your girl and just hold her tightly on the dance floor.

Sweet Soft Southern Smile is a great love story that I could actually here in a movie soundtrack.

Leave the lights on is another great love reunion song. Of all the songs on this EP I would say this is the closest they come to a true Texas country song.

Over all the Prophets and Outlaws EP is a great listen. The songs have great messages. The musicians know there craft and deliver their parts with great passion. Matt Boggs sings with a wisdom and vocal presence that you would expect from and older blues man. This young man can belt it out. The harmonies are spectacular on this EP. In future songs I would love to hear some Hammond B3 organ solos but what they are doing is spot on. I would recommend this EP to everyone and if you find yourself close go see a show.

Bio

Prophets and Outlaws is a Southern Rock band with soul. We have developed a sound that ties our passion for the Blues while embracing our Country roots and celebrating the people that paved the way. You can find elements of the old "outlaw" music in the attitude and in the way we push the boundaries of todays music.
