"7 IRM Breaking News #6"

Protocol Afro (disco-pop inconsistante)

"Music: A review of Protocol Afro at Baybeats 2011"

Protocol Afro entertained the 300-strong crowd at the Arena Stage at Baybeats 2011 with their set of indie dance tunes, along with frontman Aryadita’s seriously impressive moves. The five-piece band hailing from Jakarta played their set on the last day of this year’s edition of Baybeats and there was absolutely no doubt why they were invited to play after their infectious and incredibly fun set.

The band played a tight set, which included songs such as “Radio” and “The Youth”, which had the crowd bopping and moving along to the beat (though seated). It seems that Singaporean crowds are generally still shy when it comes to enjoying dance music outside a club, but that certainly did not deter the band when it came to their playing and personal love of performing, which was evident, especially in the vocalist and frontman Aryadita.

Showing love for the festival by rocking a Baybeats 2011 tee, he moved around the stage constantly and elicited cheers from the audience with his fancy moves and footwork, probably being one of the few in the festival to do so. An audience member even tweeted that “Protocol Afro’s singer should do a dance-off with The Drums’ singer”, prompting a response from the band saying they are in fact, fans of The Drums as well!

Ending their set on a high with “Music (Dance With Me)”, the audience was reluctant to see the band leave, and the merchandise booth was crowded with people trying to get a copy of their album, only to be disappointed that the band only had an EP with few songs. The band definitely gained many fans after their performance at Baybeats and left a firm impression on the minds of festival-goers that Indon bands are really good, and certainly left everyone wanting more (hint: a full-length album)! - Esplanade Youth

"LOCAL MUSIC HEROES: PROTOCOL AFRO"

Irresistible inconsistency.

- Nylon Magazine Indonesia
