It feels great when you find a group that's difficult to classify. There's a movement of post-genre work happening today. Artists that refuse to be defined by traditional standards or otherwise, who produce sounds so varied and mangled that it feels new. PS24 is that kind of band. A pinch of folk, a dash of hip-hop, a twist of Caribbean flavor... you get the point.
The release party was a full house at the famed Busboys and Poets in NW DC. PS24 rocked the house like no other and the crowd got a chance to see their latest video, Girlz Around My Way, produced by Park Triangle. PS24 is a Washington, DC based "folk-hop" band. The trio formed in the late 90’s, and began developing their fresh, easy sound playing gigs in DC’s historic U Street corridor. PS24 was the first resident band at DC hot spot Busboys and Poets. Among other places, they have performed at Brooklyn's BAM Café, New York City’s S.O.B’s, The Black Cat (DC), the historic Lincoln Theatre, The Black Luv Festival, and The Adams Morgan Day Festival.
After two years of playing together while managing other fruitful artistic endeavors, the three went their separate ways.
But sometimes in life, timing is everything: with the revitalization of U Street came the reunion of three men with a distinct sound and a clear message. Their "folk-hop" sound blends a soulful guitar and earthy drums with lead singer Psalm's hip-hop swagger and authentic Jamaican-American vocal style to deliver melodic lyrics that address contemporary social and political issues. Since 2006, the trio--Psalm on vocals, Waldo on guitar, and Jali-D on djembe drum--has been performing electric live shows to crowds across the DMV (DC, Maryland, Virginia) and in New York and Chicago.
Independence, their first album, takes listeners on a refreshing musical journey from love to identity to social change. Their second album, The Last Plantation, includes revolutionary anthems, confessionary odes of love, and introspective musings. With their finger on the pulse of the current times, they surely have no lack of inspiration to create more unique and original songs of substance.
