"Homespun - The Pubes - Peat Sounds;"

Peat Sounds, the second album from the Pubes, clocks in at just over 23 minutes, just enough time to cram in fourteen spry, infectious power-punk songs. The quartet continues to toe the line between winsome juvenilia and snotty, jerk-neck punk rock. It's a charming balance that the band has worked to cultivate, from the Beach Boys-saluting album title to the cutesy cartoon illustrations that adorn the liner notes. The Pubes reach for such a high level of twee-ness that it becomes subversive — even Belle & Sebastian wouldn't put pink bunnies and smiling froggies on an album cover.

Subject(s): The Pubes It's hardly worth discussing the lyrics — singers Peat Henry and Mario Viele could sing anything over these quick, crunchy songs and it would work. In fact, that seems to be the working model for most of these songs — "Oven Burn" mostly exists as an excuse to shout "Jackie Joyner-Kersee" over and over, while "In the Bathroom" questions the authorship of the Rod Stewart hit "Downtown Train." (It was, as the song admits, written by Tom Waits. Who said punk rock isn't educational?) No, the album lives and dies on the strength of its riffs and the tautness of the rhythm section; by that measure, Peat Sounds is basically flawless. The band chugs through these tracks with as much glee as ability, a rare combo that makes the band a kind of punk-rock unicorn. In fact, that might not be a bad cover image for the next Pubes record.

Bio

The Pubes formed in 2001 as a bare bones punk rock quartet seeking to rock house parties, basement shows and the occasional venue with a set of short, simplistic, and intense blasts of original punk rock inspired by bands like Ramones, Circle Jerks, Angry Samoans, Misfits, and the Queers. In 2003 the band released an 18 song album called "Wow, Baby! Let's Go Wheelin'!" capturing their punk roots and the early conception of the band in its prime.

Half a decade after forming the band has grown into a bright, whirring machine of tuneful brilliance, imparting the intensity of the original Pubes sound in a much more developed sonic playground. In 2007 the band is presenting their followup album, "Peat Sounds;" a collection of songs that are delightfully quirky, catchy, and ferocious blending elements of punk with twisted comic themes and characters, anthemic choruses, squirrely guitars and a tight, danceable rhythmic backbone. The album was tracked at the infamous Sonic Iguana studio in Lafayette, IN where bands like The Queers, The Groovie Ghoulies, Screeching Weasel and hundreds of others cut their teeth making great punk music.

The Pubes put on a loud, highly energetic live show that is more fun than a monkeys vs. humans pie fight in a zero gravity space chamber to the Benny Hill Show theme song.

The band was honored to open for Italian Hardcore legends RAW POWER on their 2007 West Coast Spring Tour, and looks forward to many more years of touring and recording to come.
