"Review of CD Release Party"

Toronto power rockers PUNISHMENT put on a *loud* bone-rattling performance -- in front of a packed, receptive audience -- at The Phoenix last Saturday night. Their impressive 4-song debut CD, "Beautiful Suffering", is being met with rave reviews. Definitely an act fast on the rise! Check out this fan shot clip from the show:

"Alan Cross Review"

"Punishment is from Toronto and yeah, they’re pretty rugged in their sound. Think Disturbed or Godsmack and you’re in the right place. They have a song called “Colours And Skeletons” that’s worth a listen off of their Beautiful Suffering album." - Alan Cross

"The Sound Academy Aug 7th,2009"

Sven Gali – Aug 7 2009 – Sven Gali, Punishment, Conflicted, Astrid Young, and Sixes and Sevens

Walking into the Sound Academy on Friday Aug 7th 2009, it was clear that this was not your everyday event. With candles placed on the tables and several big ticket items being auctioned off, the atmosphere inside the venue was very intimate and spoke of the great importance of this event.

Sven Gali guitarist, Dee Cernile, was recently diagnosed with Cancer. This benefit to help raise money for his treatment was an event close to many hearts, not only those of Dee’s fans and personal friends, but also too those of the many people whose lives have been touched by Cancer. Conflicted, Sixes and Sevens, Astrid Young, and Punishment all answered the call to help out. So too did Nick Walsh of Slik Toxic, and Revolver, who got together with Punishment for a mini Slik Toxic reunion show.

Conflicted, and Sixes and Sevens poured their hearts into their sets and with some mid song comments, and dedications towards Dee Cernile, it reminded the crowd exactly why they were there. Astrid Young performed an absolutely beautiful acoustic set, and Punishment put on an outstanding performance made even more spectacular when Nick Walsh, and Revolver joined them on stage. Sven Gali, including Dee Cernile got the crowd dancing and singing along as they played “What you give”, and joined by Andy Curran for the song “Monkey Bars”, then ending the evening with ‘Discusteen’ which brought an already extatic crowd to the heights of frenzy.

All in all it was a spectacular night of fantastic music, and many excellent stage performances. Although I’m sure that Drew Masters of M.E.A.T magazine, and all those involved in the planning and organization of the benefit were hoping for a much bigger turnout, the amount of fundraising perhaps isn’t quite as important as the emotional support from friends, and fans that Dee received on this special night. It was an unforgettable event, and I wish Dee all the best with his treatment.

"Review of PUNISHMENT's April 24th 2009 show"

Punishment – The Name Says It All!

May 4, 2009
Live Review by Brad Wilson / The Toronto Rock Radio Show on K94Rocks.com

The anticipation was high when Punishment announced their debut live performance that took place April 24 at The Corktown In Hamilton. It only seemed fitting that the inaugural show take place in a city nicknamed “The Hammer” because bringing down the hammer with beautiful execution is exactly what Punishment did that night to a sold out crowd. If anyone thought that the material was going to be anything like guitarist Kevin Gale’s previous gold selling, Juno winning act Slik Toxic, they were dead wrong! The name truly says it all…Punishment suggestively conveys the message that their music isn’t for the faint-of-heart, driving the listener into submission with glorious hard rock and metal sounds such as in the song Brother that jumps out of the gate and grabs the listener with a killer hypnotizing guitar riff. The band is backed by the powerhouse rhythms of drummer Karl Anderson and bassist Tyson Meloche, but perhaps the most intriguing in the band is vocalist Brad Searl who’s unique voice not only growls a remotely reminiscent likeness of the late great Layne Staley, but can also soar into the stratosphere with the best of them. His vocal abilities truly shine in the song Colours And Skeletons. With such a commanding performance Brad Searl will without a doubt quickly become known as one of Canada’s top vocalists. To add to all of this the band truly shines in their stage presence and conviction, easily making a deep connection with their fans that will definitely propel them to rise to the top. The band did pay their respects in a riveting cover of Eric Clapton’s “Cocaine” putting their stamp on the song and giving it a whole new and refreshing interpretation. Every once in a long while a band comes along with a live performance that is so good that it truly separates them from the rest. Bands such as Default and Foo Fighters come to mind. Add Punishment to the list!

Colours & Skeletons - PUNISHMENT

PUNISHMENT are establishing themselves as an alternative in the Toronto music scene that is sorely lacking in what a “great” rock show should be about. Their close bond with the audience allows them to transcend the emotional qualities that most bands lack in today’s market, writing songs that are both memorable and thought provoking.
Former Juno award winner Kevin Gale had a vision of the band he wanted to create, and hand picking each individual one by one and bringing this project together and collectively taking it to a new level. From the first time they entered the rehearsal room together there was invention of new ideas & music equal to none.
PUNISHMENT has recorded their debut EP entitled "Beautiful Suffering" at “Backroom Studio’s” and the CD has been received with critical acclaim. They have recently been tracking at “Metalworks Studio” in Toronto and are hoping to have a full length CD out by early 2010. After a spectacular string of shows in 2009, including capacity events at “The Phoenix” and “The Sound Academy” in Toronto, they have established themselves as one of the city’s “premier rock acts”, both headlining and opening shows for such great acts as Bif Naked/Rik Emmett/5440/The Ending/ The Respectables and Sven Gali among others.
PUNISHMENT is guaranteed to stand on their “powerful” and “passionate” LIVE performance alone, making it hard for many acts to follow with integrity.
They have also garnered airplay in some major radio markets across Canada and a forthcoming video is to be released of their first single "Colours & Skeletons" on September 10th 2009.
