Drums are ancient instruments that emit sound by being repeatedly beaten. Simple frequency embodies power, excitement and a variety of rhythms. Drums connect people from all over the world who enjoy playing them and listening to them and a variety of drum sounds are characterized by different cultures. Although all drum sounds seem to be similar at first encounter, they actually are distinct from each other, depending on the drum’s structure and materials—animal membrane and a cylinder.
Drums are the world's oldest and most ubiquitous musical instruments, and their basic design has remained virtually unchanged for thousands of years. The sound of a drum changes and controls the rhythm of music and it is easy to listen to. There exists a variety of rhythms within Korea. For example, the Southwest region of South Korea, the Kyosang province, has a very tough and powerful rhythm, the Southeast region of South Korea, the Jeonla province, has a distinct and sensitive rhythm, while the Kyonggi and Chungchun provinces in the middle region of South Korea, have a fast, new and harmonic rhythm. The Korean rhythm is also very similar to some world rhythms, including the Zulu rhythm in Africa, the Samba rhythm in South America, the Waltz rhythm in Europe and the 16 beat rock rhythm. In addition, Korean rhythm is not only similar to a variety of world rhythms, but also contains the characteristic Korean rhythm and beat. This unique rhythm is best played by the native Korean band, Puripae. All of Puripae’s performances directly relate to rhythm and beat.
Our only concern is not playing percussion drums, but also entertaining our audiences. Puripae members always look for interesting musical factors, rhythm and action. When Puripae combines music with interesting rhythms and action, it results in powerful, dynamic, danceable and energetic performances which absolutely stimulate, excite, delight and enchant their audiences.
