"Qualmes Dj Booth Feature"

It may be mid-September but California sunshine coupled with heavily layered synths and the ghost of Roger Troutman will make it feel like summer any time of the year. For his first DJ Booth feature, Pasadena’s own Qualmes has no issues on G. Cue‘s bouncy Nothin’s Hollywood production, which also features the man behind the capitalized statement Skeme. The latest single from Qualmes’ Mood Swings project (out now), Nothin’s Hollywood finds the duo treating the track like a two-man relay team. Skeme lets easily packaged punchlines (and one hashtag rap moment) set up Qualmes’ polished soliloquy on how listening to Too $hort and others of Todd Shaw’s ilk help shaped him. Looks like the West continues to produce artists worthy of repeated listens. - DjBooth.com

Breakout: “Sacrifices”

Also Check: “Lose Control”

And: “Situations”

Name: Qualmes

Age: 24

Reppin’: Pasadena, CA

I started rapping: I started writing and messing around with rap in 11th grade (2004) I started taking being a writer serious around 2007 around my first tape with Dj Haze.

My style and/or skills have been compared to: A street savvy Drake

My standout records and/or moments have been: “Heartbeat” on my (Mood Swings EP) the record is incredible and what the mainstream radio waves need.A record with quality substance with no gimmick or for the moment sound in it. “Sacrifices” also on (Mood Swings) is a real personal record of mine. The song and visuals for the record release the pain your average inner city youth deals with growing up while trying to provide a better surrounding for there future family all while trying to make ends meet for the moment.

I’m gonna change the game by: Providing a constant quality body of work. Whether the project is funded directly out of my pockets or a labels there is not an ounce of room for error. Every track has to be written like its the last outlet anyone will hear directly from you

I’d Like to Work With: Sade is at the top of my list but being she doesn’t collaborate with other artist I would defiantly like to work with The Clutch to take my writing to the next level or Nas because he’s taught everyone how to be a fly slick mouthed lyricist.

My goal in hip-hop is: To show artist how to have a balance in their music. Don’t focus on only one aspect of a song. A hook needs powerful lyrics with a message behind them just like deep rooted verses need a hook to tie everything together. You have to tackle every area of song writing to bring forth a complete product.

I’m gonna be the next: I’m actually gonna be the first Euro/American rap rtist that people see rise to the status as a musical icon. - XXL

Circa 1980’s in Los Angeles California, Qualmes A.K.A Clark Bent was already a force to be reckoned with. Born of Danish and African American decent, Qualmes spent his younger years between Denmark and LA which gave him a different outlook on life. “[My] music is most inspired by traveling. I have been all around Europe and the United States” Because of this, Qualmes has experienced many things most people only dream of. However being raised by his mother with his father in and out of his life, he remembers to stay humble.
Qualmes started his interest in music at a young age. “I was riding in the car with my dad when 2-Pacs ‘2 Of Amerikaz Most Wanted’ came on. I rapped back the whole song word for word to him and my dad told me, ‘You do that pretty good, now put your own words to it’ I didn't pay any attention to it at the time, being so young, but as my music listening expanded I became obsessed with the stories different artist would put out on the tracks.” And that is apparent in his music. Qualmes was influenced by some of the greats, Nas, Sade, Michael Jackson, Dj Quik, and song writers such as Garth Brooks which lead him to his first mixtape, “A Recipe For Destruction” hosted by Dj Haze from Blackwallstreet which was released 2008. “I’m more than just a rapper. I take pride in songwriting; piecing together songs with concepts”
Qualmes has done mixtapes with the clothing brands such as Bobbyfresh, and The Pros & Cons. One of his most notable features is from La Rapper Skeme on his track ‘Nothin's Hollywood’ a song from the ‘Mood Swings’ ep. Qualmes is best known for my catchy hooks. “Most rappers put all there energy into their verses then slack off on their hooks. You have to have a balance in the music. I don't slack off in any department when it comes to my songs. It’s like building a classic muscle car, what is the point in putting 50 thousand plus in interior and exterior then dropping a bullshit engine in it?” Qualmes has performed at many shows a venues, however his most memorable performances was when he packed out Club Element twice in in one year! He released his first video 'What You Gone Do" in 2010. It was followed by two other videos, "Lose Control" in the spring of 2010 which features two detectives with a plot against Qualmes. He then released "Situations" which is, in a way, part II, where the same two detectives plan to capture Qualmes. You can truly see the personality of the man called Qualmes through his lyrics, shows and videos.
Plans for the future? “Continue to stay constant with quality product. Take the indie route for as long as I can to keep money in my own personal circle and have full creative control to any & all projects I work on” His 5th and latest albu
