"Review of Jason Quick's "Make Music""

The duo of electric guitar and drums has a certain unique character, simultaneously thin and thick; the relationship between the players a bit like a boxer and coach, if either could find a way to step in and out of each other's shoes at will. While the recordings on Make Music are culled from four separate sessions, the program still has the flowing feeling of an extended performance, building up to the final "Hell's Trumpet." This piece, with some truly strange guitar sounds, is the most abstract of the six performances, one of which is named "Larry Coryell" in honor of one of the great creators of intense instrumental guitar music. The opening "An Alan Smithee Tune" is an example of Jason Quick and Alan Smith being less concerned with textures and new sounds than with just a good-natured jazz-rock feeling. -- Eugene Chadbourne - All Music Guide

Bio

The Quick Trio is one of the most innovative jazz groups to take stages, storefronts, and back rooms all over Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan. In their relentless pursuit of creative expression, the members of the Trio have performed with the Trio, individually, or with other groups at venues like: Degage Jazz Cafe (Maumee, OH); Manhattan's (Toledo, OH); Music Hall Jazz Cafe (Detroit, MI); Baker's Keyboard Lounge (Detroit, MI); Cliff Bell's (Detroit, MI); Murphy's Place (Toledo, OH); Toledo Museum of Art; Toledo Zoo; Toledo Botanical Gardens; 2009 Ann Arbor Summer Art Fair; Toledo's Old West End Festival; and many special events, including the Arts Commission of Greater Toledo's annual gala fundraiser. The Quick Trio is a mainstay at Manhattan's in Toledo, where they have held audiences' attention for over two years on Thursday nights.

Raised in Livonia, MI, guitar virtuoso and front man, Jason Quick, received his undergrad degree in music from Wayne State, and earned his masters in guitar at Bowling Green State University. Jason's honed his chops playing with talented jazz musicians across the region and the country--from Toledo, Detroit, Ann Arbor, Chicago, Cincinnati, Hartford, and New Orleans. Jason always has a number of music projects going at any time, and composes colorful and complex jazz music. And when the Quick Trio lays down Jason's original tunes, the crowd doesn't know what hit it, but they clap like crazy. Jason performed at the 2002 Detroit Jazz Festival with his Quicktet.

Toledo-native, Vytas Nagisetty, developed his groove-conscious bass style from living and playing in Berkeley, San Francisco, New York, and Paris. Currently living in Toledo, Vytas runs Man Cave Studios, in which he records local original music, including his own with his rock band, Vytas and the Electric Outfit.

Born in Mansfield, OH, Jerry Powell is finishing up his music degree from the University of Toledo. All the while, he has supported himself and dazzled crowds performing in jazz, blues, R&B, and gospel groups.

The Quick Trio plays to the room, and entertains venues and events from small and private, to large and social.
