Rachel is a 23-year old singer-songwriter from Sydney, Australia. Her songs are about growing up; learning about love, sadness and spiritual things. They traverse genres, from folk, country and blues to jazz, soul and Aussie art music; all within a piano-based pop sound.

Biography

My songwriting career began at the age of five years, around the time I started learning the piano. At first, my compositions were little tunes made up to impress my piano teacher, but as I learned to play better, my writing took on the flavour of Australian art music. It wasn't until I finished school that I wrote songs with lyrics.

Gradually, I've moved away from classical piano to more of a pop sound; though there are elements of a number of styles in most of my songs.

Last year, I recorded twelve songs written over the past five years. Now, I'm trying to gain exposure for these songs by entering songwriting competitions, and by contacting publishers through a manager in Sydney.

I want to become a professional songwriter and, ideally, to record my own songs for commercial release.

Lyrics

Not Every Day

Written By: Rachel Cush

The sun never gets high in the winter sky, I have discovered, and I never realised what a change can come just wearing a smile around. I woke up today head over heels; now, it's not every day of the year.

The boy, he caught my eye; with an easy gait, he walked on over. Don't know why - he took my hand and we talked all night; we had a lot to say. I woke up today head over heels; now, it's not every day of the year.

My head is spinning with thoughts, feelings, fantasies: Will we be together now or will we just be friends? Only time will tell, but one or the other way, I woke up today head over heels; now, it's not every day of the year.

I woke up today head over heels; now, it's not every day of the year that I feel like laughing like I feel today, like I feel today.

Of All the Things

Written By: Rachel Cush

When you tell me that you love me, when you tell me that you care,
When you tell me that you need me, darlin’, you say more than I can bear (yeah).
When you wrap your arms around me (oh so tight), it’s all I can do to breathe the air.

When you tell me that you love me (Lord, I know that it ain’t right),
I say, “I’m right there with you, darlin’.” Ooh ooh ooh, I tell you lies all through the night. (Lord, I know it ain’t right.)

But I don’t want to break your heart, baby; I don’t want to tear us apart; I don’t want to make you regret me.

But of all of the things that I don’t want to do, there’s just one that would be too unbearably cruel:

Of all the things I don’t want to do, don’t want to keep leading you on
Of all the things I don’t want to be, don’t want to be leading you on.

When you call to say you want me, when you call to say you care,
When you call to say you need me, darlin’, you call more than I can bear. Don’t come around here; I can’t, I can’t breathe the air.

When you call to say you want me, yeah, yeah, (Lord I know it’s getting tired) I say, “Wish I was with you, darling,” I tell you lies along the wire.

But I don’t want to break your heart, baby; I don’t want to tear us apart; I don’t want to make you regret me.

But of all of the things that I don’t want to do, there’s just one that would be too unbearably cruel:

Of all the things I don’t want to do, don’t want to keep leading you on.
Of all the things I don’t want to be, I don’t want to be leading you on.

Flying Solo

Written By: Rachel Cush

Timing, it can be wrong; I waited patiently, an eternity, for a change to come.
How you gonna keep on flying solo, how you gonna keep flying?

Rising with the winter sun, it can be lonesome without you; it can be numb.
How you gonna keep on flying solo, how you gonna keep flying?

This river its course has run; I won’t be waiting for a lifetime for my chance to come.
How you gonna keep on flying solo, how you gonna keep flying?
