RACHELLE KOSTELYK BIO

Rachelle Kostelyk brings something new, exciting and eclectic to popular music with the release of her second independent EP, But You Know. Rachelle's music effortlessly weaves aspects of jazz, funk and Gospel into a veritable tapestry of rhythm and soulful melody. But You Know, released in the spring of 2008 (after the successful release of her first EP, Always Ahead, in the spring of 2005, Always Ahead), is three original songs brought to life by Rachelle's deep, powerful vocals and expert piano playing and backed by beautiful string and horn arrangements performed by talented musicians. All songs are written, performed and arranged by Rachelle, and produced by Jon Anderson at Buena Vista Studios and Steve Klassen at Sapphire Sound. With authentic and revealing lyrics, “Lilies” take the listener back to the days of the great jazz and classical pianists with a soulful, progressive sound, while “Circle” offers a smooth, laid back groove. Throughout the EP Rachelle exhibits superior technique, proving that she can do it all.

Her influences include Eva Cassidy, Aretha Franklin, Fiona Apple, Ani Difranco and Jann Arden, and she draws inspiration from the people she has encountered and the experiences that she has shared with them.

Born in Calgary and raised outside of Vancouver, BC, Rachelle began playing piano at age nine and had completed the Royal Conservatory piano training by the time she was seventeen. In 2002, Rachelle released her first EP, a self-titled debut featuring seven of her early songs. The following year she moved to Edmonton, Alberta and enrolled in Grant MacEwan Fine Arts College as a vocal performance major, and later finished a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music and English. Rachelle is currently working toward a full-length album, and at present devotes all of her time to pursuing her musical goals. In the past, Rachelle has made a living performing at various restaurants and lounges in Alberta and BC, playing a wide variety of classical, jazz and improvisational piano. In recent years she has played extensively in the Vancouver area in clubs (The Backstage Lounge, The Roxy, The Media Club, The Buffalo Club to name a few) and at organized events within the community. Ranked one of the top ten up and coming musical artists in the Fraser Valley, she either performs solo or with a full band, and always draws a crowd.
