"Listen"

Listen” is seven tracks of solid rock, much of it with an ‘80s feel (the well-written “Lost in the City” and rocker “Just What I Needed”). Fronted by songwriter Bosch Boschetti, Radio Friendly has taken pains to inject some innovative touches on “Listen.” The shimmering “Radio” opens, appropriately enough, with some radio looping, landing on a Christian preacher before kicking off their melodic rock. Boschetti’s soulful vocals fit the material well, soaring over the tasty guitar tidbits of the looming rocker “Jesus,” complete with a throbbing guitar solo from Mark Hofman. “Precious” is nicely arranged, celebrating Christ’s work on Calvary through thick guitars. The project ends well, with the slamming rocker “All About You,” don’t miss the chunky bass line. I found the production muddy at times, but Boschetti and crew are a nice shot in the arm, musically and spiritually speaking.

Radio Friendly got their start back in 1998. The heart of the band is Bosch Boschetti (lead vocals, backing vocals) and Mark Hofman (guitars, sounds, backing vocals). The band won the, Bay Area Battle of the Bands held in Northern California in 2001. The band has also appeared with groups like, DecembeRadio, The 77’s, Matthew West, and Building 429.

Radio Friendly has released several previous projects including the, Change EP, Live from the Hangout, Christ Like All Star, and their Listen EP.

The band is now back with their 5th release titled, Surrender. On it you’ll find a mixture of all out rockers and alt. rock music style of songs. The one constant is the Christ centered lyrics found in the songs.

The song, “My Reward,” gets the release started with its pulsating rock beats, dealing with living your life totally for the Lord. This song and “My Tribute” a rock worship track reminded me of the well-known Christian worship band Delirious? sound.

I really liked the rhythmic drumming found on several of the songs along with the guitar parts that are always there doing their part adding a rich flavor in to the songs.

Fans of the 70’s/80’s Boston band, The Cars will quickly recognize track-5, “Just What I Needed,” The song was The Cars’ first single, and found on their debut album, The Carsreleased in 1978. Radio Friendly does a solid job of covering and tweaking the song’s lyrics.

One of the more original songs found on Surrender is, “Tragedy.” You get two version of the song, the first is found on track-7 and incorporates some rap vocals in to it, while the second version found as a bonus track (track-12), is a more straight up rock version of the same song.

With Surrender the band has put together a really nice collection of rocking songs with a strong, positive Christian message.
