Jarod Harmeier, SXSW Music Festival judge, ran across Jes Woodward's demo amongst a sea of applicants during his search for the 2005 SXSW music line-up. On Friday, January 7, 2005, she received an email.

"I've been listening to hundreds of CD's over the last few weeks and yours definately made an impression on me. Your voice really struck me as something powerful."

Bio

Jessica Rae Woodward is RAELUX. At 17 months of age, she sang her first solo in church. Throughout grade school and high school, Jess wrote songs as therapy. It wasn't until her dad bought her a guitar when she turned 19 that she became serious about her craft. She continued her training at Texas State University, where she earned a BFA in Acting, performing in musicals and plays. In her free time, she would lock herself up in a piano room at the university's music department where she wrote and recorded demos. In 2005, a friend encouraged her to submit her songs to the South by Southwest music festival and she earned a showcase. That summer she moved to Los Angeles and began to experiment with her sound. From 2009 to 2010, Jess created her musical persona, RAELUX. "Rae" is her middle name and "lux" is an illumination of light, therefore bringing out the truth within her. She knew she needed something bigger, something more dangerous. During the yearlong hiatus, she created her sound and built a thesis for her work. Part of that journey could not have been done without the help from producer Paul Layton. Paul and Jess worked on a three song EP, WALKABOUT. Jess wanted to experiment with sounds, rhythms, and especially her voice. After the release of WALKABOUT in 2010, she spent 2011 traveling the world—Malta, Hungary, Great Britain, Scotland. Songs began to flow. She laid down ideas into Garageband. Getting home, she contacted her friend/producer Jeff Kirchner to work on a 5 song EP with her. She knew she wanted something edgy and direct, while keeping the magic/warrior princess sound. Together they produced, THE WOMAN IS A GUN. Get ready for the MARCH 13th release. RAELUX will tour the new EP in 2012.
