"Colombian maestro calls Mosman home"

Colombian maestro calls Mosman home

RAFA Godoy's parents must have had a glimpse into the future when they named their son after his grandather, acclaimed Colombian composer Rafael Godoy.

Because true to his name, Rafa has developed a passion for music (although he's dropped the ``el'' of his name to make it different).

Rafa is trained in classic guitar and began learning at the age of 10 with Antonio Zapata in Caracas.

He moved to the US to study music while still young but was not happy with that nation's music scene and, aged 20, he sought out musical freedom in Australia.

He now lives at Mosman.
``Australia is very friendly. Australians are not afraid to listen to music from other cultures,'' he said.

Rafa now combines his guitar talent with his own compositions and electronic sound.

Last year, he released a CD, Nostalgia, featuring traditional music from Venezuela.

He has recently launched a new EP entitled Dialogo which showcases his synthesis of styles.

``It takes a lot of courage to come to a country on your own without family and friends so the rest is not so difficult,'' he said.

Rafa will perform at Sol's Deck Bar at Taylor Square at 8pm on August 23.
