Biography

The Persuit of truth has led the artist Rajae el Mouhandiz on an incredible journey that few would believe. This journey has given birth to an artist, a poet, a soldier, a teacher and an angel who defies belief. Those who have been touched by Rajae, by her words, her music, her heart and her soul have experienced something so wonderful it escapes definition, except perhaps to be decribed as truth. The truth about Rajae is simple. She was born to an Algerian mother and a Moroccan father on 25.03.1979 shortly before her family immigrated to Amsterdam. Even as a baby, Rajae imagined herself as an artist. At (the age of) four she began ballet training, thus beginning a journey of discovery that would propel her into a myriad of art forms. At 8 she began playing the French horn and at sixteen she became the first Moroccan girl to attend Music College in the Netherlands, devoting herself to the study of classical music. At twenty, having intimately learned the classical forms and yearning to delve into more progressive styles, she boldly left college to create her own music and disover her own artistic truth The beauty of Rajae’s art is complex. It is bathed in the love of a passionate soul, it shines with the hopes and dreams of an idealist, it bleeds from the wounds of an unjust world, it marches forward with the courage of a revolutionary, it carries the infinite wisdom of a learned sage, it laughs with the innocence of a blissful child, it flies with the freedom of an enlightened spirit. It is rock, it is jazz, it is pop, it is drum ‘n bass, it is Arab, it is European, it is native, it is foreign, it is poetry, it is philosophy, it is unique, it is beauty in every word, every chord and every beat. The spirit of Rajae now flows to the world through her art as her songwriting, composing, producing and singing have given birth to a form of music that is truly her own. In 2003, Rajae began to gather a community of wonderfully talented spirits who now form the collective that she works and performs with –AHLESUFI, People of the Platform. AHLESUFI have been performing at clubs, theaters and festivals, sharing their distinctive form of music, beauty and truth with their audiences around the world. Rajae is current focusing on the release of her long-awaited debut album, “INCARNATION”. She will also be featured in a 50 min. docu/film about her music and life, directed by Olga Busch, which will premiere at the IDFA: International Documentary Festival in Amsterdam in November 2006. The words above attempt to describe the person, the journey and and the art of Rajae El Mouhandiz, yet words are dreadfully inadequate for this purpose. The only way to begin to understand Rajae is through her music, so listen, learn, love and share this journey in search of Truth. Text written by: Rajesh Anandan
