""Keeping It Unreal With Raja Khan At The Warehouse""

Deep in the heart of Davie, FL, (Broward County’s Hinterland, if you will), where it seems there’s nothing more than feed-stores, ranches, and the Bergeron Rodeo Fairgrounds… there hides a fenced-in cluster of storage spaces, known to a handful of South Florida musicians and their friends simply as: “The Warehouse.” It’s here that I found Raja Kahn (plus a few friends), completely immersed in the jam, in their studio/rehearsal/recording space. The 6 dark-haired boys in the tiny room (all but one were sporting more abundant and luxurious locks than this girl, I must admit!) worked magic with a mini-electric piano, mini-harp, acoustic bass, guitar, and even a sitar… which is awesome, and yes that is my bias."
The band’s current line-up features founding members brothers Gilahd and Raphael Yefet (on guitar/vox and percussion, respectively) and bassist Ben Berson (long-time friend of Raphael’s), plus a recent addition of a second guitarist, Cobi, who will be featured on the next record, due out some time in early 2011.
Citing such inspiration as The Animal Kingdom, The Abyss, and David Bowie, this band brings an exciting and unique brand of proggy, jammin’, (almost devotional sounding) noise, with as many cultural influences as there are instruments and sequins in their studio combined. And trust me, that is a lot.
Over the next few hours, the boys treated me to a few more impromptu jam sessions (switching instruments almost every time… this is one of those bands where everyone can play almost everything!), and educated me on a number of topics:

* the Bermuda Triangle (“Exists, and is where Atlantis is hiding.”)
* Atlantis (“Listen, it’s in the Bremuda Triangle for real.”)
* the best falafel in Broward is Pita Plus for sure.. (I actually already knew this, but it is a fact worth repeating.)
The boys are gearing up for an entirely DIY cross-country tour, beginning this December, to promote their LP, Sons. In the meantime, you can catch them playing shows across South Florida….

(this Wednesday at BAR, Miami Beach, as part of Dreamscape Wednesdays: event info here)

"Expressions Rich in Character"

The notion of new dimensions of our mind will always be an aspect of our infinite curiosity. Many people fear the chasms because of the potential to get lost within them, many embrace them for that very reason. Losing ones’ self is definitely an aspect of the band Raja Khan. Their show last night at Death to the Sun 2 was an open invitation to all ears. Free of charge, the band came on stage and lit the place up with the most cohesive performance of the night, despite missing the saxophone. Set up on the floor and splashing into the crowd, there was no barrier between audience and performer. The depth of their development was apparent in the pedal setup, a forest of sounds from one guitar. I recommend the track Jenesis for any first time listeners although their entire album “Sons” is a tastefully twisted body of work... - Eric Hurley, Wordpress.com

Bio

Raja Khan was formed in the Summer of 2009 by brothers Gilahd (Guitar / Vocals) and Raphael Yefet (Percussion). Soon after, long-time friend Ben Bersson (Bass) joined the band with a new force, creating the unmistakable sound of Raja Khan. They played at various venues, clubs, and bars across Miami, eventually developing a new movement in the Miami music scene. They soon gained a following and a great reputation as a local band. In August 2010, Raja Khan released their first album, "Sons," featuring Elijah Rigaud on the saxophone. They are currently working on a new album due sometime in 2011.
