"Rakel’s “Milagros Organicos” CD Review"

Rakel’s “Milagros Organicos” CD Review
Posted: 18 Mar 2013 06:22 PM PDT
“Milagros Organicos” (Organic Miracles) is the title of debut album for young Colombian pop-latino artist Rakel.
The most impressive thing about Rakel is the artistic maturity displayed by this young artist in her 1st recording.

For example, to select the songs for “Milagros Organicos”, Rakel considered songs from Latin music genres that go from the pop-latino of Spanish group Presuntos Implicados, to the Salsa music of Oscar D’Leon. From the Venezuelan Salsa legend, Rakel made a version of his early hit “Lloraras” which she did not include in the final cut of the album, but that she does perform in some Live gigs to great acclaim from her fans.

To form her band, Rakel wanted the members to be from her native Medellin. To this extent, she invited her friends Diego Gomez (pianist and musical director) and Maximiliano Sanchez, who played guitars. Rakel assembled the rest of her band by an open request she did on social media sites.

“Milagros Organicos” was launched in June 2012 under the indie label Mikaela Records, and was produced by Iker Gastaminza.

What I Like About “Milagros Orgánicos”

The 1st thing I like about “Milagros Organicos” is that it has a lot of music. It contains 15 Latin pop tracks, although it really has 14 songs and an instrumental filler at the end of about 1 minute).

Rakel is the new latin-pop sensation from Colombia with “Milagros Organicos”
Rakel is a singer-songwriter, with a young and fresh voice. She sings with passion and her songs, mostly about love themes, have cohesive and interesting lyrics. Another thing I liked is the variety of the music in the album. Rakel uses different types of arrangements and instrumentation throughout “Milagros Organicos”, which keeps it fresh and interesting to listen.
• An example of this are the songs “Ni Tu Ni Nadie” and “Jardin del Eden”, where she uses a mix of trumpets, trombones, and saxs in a pop-rock arrangement that resembles the sound of 1970′s American iconic band “Chicago”.

I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the music in “Milagros Organicos”. The band uses different instrumentation on the songs, like violins, acordeon, guitars (electric and acustical), and various types of saxophones, besides basic instruments like piano, bass, and percussion.

My favorite songs of “Milagros Organicos” are:
• “Superhéroe”- which has a samba-like rhythm.
• “Entre Nosotros” – which features Sebastian Yepes, ex singer of Colombian group Sanalejo, and highlights the accoustic guitar.
• “Nocturna Epifanía” – also with a samba rhythm which highlights the violin
• ..and “Ni Tu Ni Nadie”, which makes the 4th promotional video of the album.
• Another song worth mentioning is “No Me Hables de Amor”, which is more of a rock-pop song, and was penned by the excellent Cuban songwriter Jorge Luis Piloto.

In summary, “Milagros Organicos” is a latin-pop album with lots good and varied music, great musicality, and excellent recording quality.

What I Didn’t Like About “Milagros Orgánicos”

The only song which I really didn’t care much about was “Marrakech”, which like its name implies, has this arab type of sound, which I didn’t find enticing.

The only other thing that I didn’t like was that last filler song “Outro”, but I’m finding that that type of song is used by some bands as an epilog to the recording. Argentinean band “Bajofondo” did the same thing in their recent album. But to me that just messes up your MP3 player if you have it in shuffle mode.

My Recommendation of “Milagros Orgánicos”

Rakel performing with her band.

I was pleasantly impressed by the quality of this recording. I didn’t expect an album of such musical maturity from the debut album of a young latin-pop music artist like Rakel.

Rakel showcases her talent throughout the album, which is very well produced and recorded. I believe “Milagros Organicos” will of the liking of fans of latin-pop music, particularly by the younger generations, because some of the experiences displayed in Rakel songs can relate better to the young, but also to those of us still young at heart! - Latino Music cafe
